Are you an experienced Neonatal Nurse looking to expand your clinical practice and take it to the next step to become an Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner?

If so…..

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Team at University Hospital Sussex as a Trainee Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner to commence the academic in September 2025.

We are looking for a dynamic and highly motivated, innovative practitioner to join us and work across site at our ANNP Led Level 1 SCBU at the Princess Royal Hospital Hayward’s Heath and our Level 3 tertiary NICU which includes surgery at the Trevor Mann Baby Unit NICU in Brighton.

Minimal criteria prior to applying are that you should hold a qualification in specialty (QIS) for Neonatal ITU, HDU and SCBU and ideally have a relevant mentorship qualification.

Your academic component will be managed by the University of Southampton where you will attend block weeks of taught modules over 12 months and your clinical experience will be managed at both clinical areas.

There is a basic science package to be completed prior to commencing the course.

We welcome applications from those who currently hold a UK NMC registration. If you currently hold an overseas nursing qualification and require sponsorship we are not currently direct hiring Internationally Qualified Nurses.

 

 

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will complete the programme on a Fulltime/Part time basis which will be discussed on appointment.

The ANNP promotes individualised family-centred holistic care for the neonate and their family, utilising their advanced skills set and knowledge base. 

The post-holder will exercise professional autonomy in the delivery of safe, evidenced based care and deliver high quality medical management to all babies in all categories of care.

Full Time

Successful applicant will complete all academic modules within the academic year September 2025-Sept 2026 following on from this there will be a 3-6 month consolidation period. You will be supported with supervision from the ANNP + Medical team and Medical team.

Successful completion of this will result in an automatic progression to an 8A substantive post with the ANNP team.

Successful applicants are required to complete the full MSc Dissertation on appointment of your substantive 8A post.

Part time

Complete all academic components across 2 academic years Sept 2025- September 2027.

·       Year one: Complete evidence based practice and clinical decision making modules whilst working as a neonatal nurse.

·       Year two: You will come onto the clinical floor supernumery to achieve all the clinical components.

Successful applicants are required to complete the full MSc Dissertation on appointment of your substantive 8A post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main roles and responsibilities of the successful applicant will be to develop themselves during their training to the following which will aid in their progression to their 8A substantive post.

Clinical Practice:

  • Assessing, planning and implementation of care for infants across all categories of care.
  • Postnatal ward cover and managing both low risk and babies requiring transitional care and supporting the midwifery team with completing of New-born Physical Examination (NIPE)
  •  Attending high risk deliveries on both sites.
  •  Leading on resuscitation and stabilisation on delivery suite at the Princess Royal Hospital in Hayward’s heath.
  • Delivery bleep holder across both sites.
  • Utilisation of advanced skill set (Decision making, Intubation, vascular access, LP)
  • Independent prescriber.
  • Keeping up to date with all advanced clinical skill sets

Leadership

  • Involvement or leading on projects (local/national) to promote safe practice and patient experience.
  • Line management of trainee ANNPs during their training with the support of a Senior ANNP.
  •  Attending ATAIN, NNAP, ANNP training days and managing your non clinical time appropriately.

Education

  •         Supporting the practice development nurses with education session on team days
  •          NLS/ARNI instruction if applicable on our local courses
  •         Teaching at local university to support the Qualification In Speciality (QIS) training of our nursing colleagues
  •         Bed site teaching for both our medical and nursing colleagues.
  •         Leading simulation

Research

  •        Be Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certified to be involved with local research
  •        Be involved or lead on Quality Improvement initiatives
  •        Keep up to to date with local clinical trial protocols

 

Regular one-to-ones with Clinical Supervisor and ANNP mentor will be required and will be the responsibility of the trainee to arrange these.
