Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Children's Emergency Department at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital for an experienced nurse practitioner. Ideally you will have a background in urgent/emergency care, especially working with children, to enable you to work as part of our dedicated team of Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
The role is a fixed term contract and will allow you to develop on your own skills/knowledge as well as gain added skills in the management of the injured child to increase your confidence in managing a variety of paediatric specific injury presentations. We hope these new skills and knowledge will help further your own careers as well as you playing a valuable and crucial role in the service we provide.
This can also be an option to apply for our internal bank service for adhoc working in the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital

Main duties of the job
Duties include working autonomously to assess/examine, formulate of plans of care, and discharge/refer children aged 0-16 years presenting with injuries or minor illness . This will include the carrying out duties such as:
- Primary wound closure.
- Management of limb/digit fractures/deformities including plastering and splinting.
- Requesting and interpreting x-rays.
- Referral of patient's to speciality services.
- Role modeling and taking part in education of the wider departmental MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Role Summary
- To autonomously assess, investigate, diagnose, treat and refer or discharge children and young people attending the Emergency Department. This is carried out within the parameters of the Emergency Nurse Practitioners (ENPs) scope of practice and Trust guidelines.
- To have accountability, authority and responsibility to ensure a high quality patient centred service.
- To be an effective role model and provide clinical expertise within the department.
- To provide specialist knowledge to patients and staff in practical and theoretical aspects of paediatric injuries in the Emergency Department.
· Where appropriate to work within the CED team on professional nursing issues and management of clinical governance issues
· To participate in educational and training programmes for junior members of the team, including doctors within the department.
· To support the Matron and senior sisters/charge nurses to ensure that high quality patient focused care is delivered within the Children’s Emergency Department (CED).
· The post holder will be required to work flexibly to achieve the key responsibilities of the post.

Experience/ Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Relevant experience of working independently as an ENP/NP already in urgent/emergency care
- Relevant physical assessment/Minor injuries course.
- NMC registration or equivalent
- AHP with paediatric experience
- PILS
- Teaching and assessing in clinical practice or equivalent
- Educated to degree level
- Post registration study in paediatric acute or emergency care
- Experience working in acute/emergency setting treating acute injuries
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working clinically with children
- Evidence of clinical decision making - qualification/evidence of competencies
- Post graduate certificate level education ideally in acute care/emergency care/ANP/Paediatrics
- RCN A&E competencies (Level 2)
- Additional qualifications in teaching or education
- History taking and physical assessment course
- Experience in management role
- Minor Illness Course
- Up to date IRMER
