Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a highly motivated, dedicated team of Porters taking a position as Assistant Duty Manager leading a team at the  Royal Sussex County Hospital.

To assist and lead in the delivery of quality porter, linen and waste management services achieving the highest possible standards for patients, visitors and staff at all times.

Supervise effective and efficient services that meet agreed Trust policies, procedures and operational procedures as directed by the Duty Manager or Help Desk Dispatcher

Responsible for the standards and hours worked in their areas of responsibility by adhering to the allocation of levels of labour and other costs, including the management of working rosters.

When required may need to assist with the emergency and evacuation procedures and security situations in accordance with Trust policy.

The post holder will ensure there is ownership of Soft FM services for all patients, staff and visitors who attend the ward areas, clinical departments and public areas.

The post holder will need to be fully aware of the Trust’s Values & Behaviours and Patient First initiatives and act accordingly.

As an Assistant Duty Manager for porters will work as part of a team leading a shift ensuring 24/7 cover to the hospital for porters which covers many aspects of the hospitals activities:

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. To supervise all porter service activities including patient movement, domestic and clinical waste removal, blood sample/blood product collections, transport of medical gases, mortuary duties, security incidents and helicopter landing responses as required.
  2. To work and ensure that porter staff work in accordance with Health & Safety Guidelines and Trust/Departmental Policies & Procedures at all times.
  3. To manage the computerised porter job allocation and activity reporting system when delegated by the Duty Manager.
  4. Responsible for the performance and hours worked in areas of responsibility by adhering to the allocation of levels of labour and other costs, including the management of working rosters.
  5. Work with the Duty Manager to plan and amend work schedules/staffing levels to meet fluctuating service activity/demands.
  6. Highlight any perceived need for staff overtime and bank expenditure to the Duty Manager for approval.
  7. Promote a safe working environment within Porter, ensuring the safe use and storage of all equipment and materials.
  8. Ensure that sufficient stock levels of equipment are maintained and any deficiencies reported immediately.
  9. Report any defects in equipment used in the services to the Duty Manager.
  10. Ensure staff are provided with, and wear, the correct uniform and personal protective clothing where necessary and act as a role model in this respect.
  11. Ensure that Porters respect the privacy and dignity of patients whilst carrying out their duties.

Person specification

Experience and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • A Good level of general education, Numeracy and Literacy or equivalent experience
  • Willing to undertake Training required, COSHH, Health and Safety and Manual Handling
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ L4, HND, BTEC in a support service is desirable
