Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Therapeutic Radiographer who is passionate about teaching and education. The Practice Educator will be responsible for the coordination of provision and development of clinical placements for preregistration students and apprentices in the radiotherapy department. Sussex Cancer Centre radiotherapy department is based at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and operates satellite services in Preston Park Radiotherapy Centre and Eastbourne Radiotherapy Unit. This post will require attendance at all sites.  

We are looking for an enthusiastic, forward thinking, creative individual who is keen to develop and support innovative radiotherapy education. The post holder will be responsible for support and guidance to other staff regarding clinical teaching and supervision whilst acting as a liaison between the department and higher education institutions. The responsibilities of the post may also extend to staff training and education. As a clinical expert, you will also support patients through their cancer journey.

Our sites are equipped with state-of-the-art technology including Elekta Versa HD Linacs, Tomotherapy, and Philips Widebore CT scanners. We also offer advanced HDR brachytherapy services.

Main duties of the job

Having an advanced understanding and knowledge of the radiotherapy process, the post holder will be a clinical expert in Radiotherapy. They will have responsibilities within the role they are employed to ensure good communication, good understanding of safety, excellent patient care, development under evidence base practice and teaching skills for all aspects of their job. 

They will support an increase in radiotherapy student and apprentice placement capacity at UHSussex by demonstrating complex organisational skills and creatively utilising and developing resources. The post holder will maintain a high level of clinical skills and as part of the education team, deputise for the Radiotherapy Practice Development Manager when required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder is a clinical specialist in the calculating and treatment of radiotherapy patients at the Sussex Cancer Centre and will be in charge of the coordination of provision and development of clinical placements for pre-registration students and apprentices in the radiotherapy department. The post holder requires advanced clinical knowledge of radiotherapy treatment procedures, radiation tolerances for human tissue, and physiological reactions due to exposure (side effects). The post holder will practise in accordance with current legislation governing the use of ionising radiation. The post holder must be able to manage their workload, ensuring efficient and safe patient care. An advanced level of competence is required in the use of a wide range of highly complex technical and computerised systems

Essential criteria
  • Post graduate module or equivalent experiential knowledge in clinical education
  • Experience of staff supervision, mentoring and effective people management
  • Previous experience of participating in clinical education of pre-registration students
  • Advanced all round knowledge of radiotherapy techniques

  • Accredited learning qualification
  • Experience of training or coaching in a health care setting
