Job overview

We are looking for a highly skilled and  experienced Medical Secretary to work as part of our friendly and highly efficient Rheumatology secretarial team.  You will be based in the Louisa Martindale Building at the Royal Sussex County Hospital.

You must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to communicate with NHS colleagues, patients and relatives by email, telephone and face to face.

Excellent IT skills and English is essential. 

You must be able to priorities your workload, be good at time management and have the ability to meet deadlines.

You must have 2 years’ experience of a secretarial/administrative role, medical secretarial experience preferred. 

Knowledge of working in a hospital environment or similar environment is desirable but not essential.

We are happy to consider a job share if appropriate and suitable candidates are available.

Main duties of the job

Working alongside the other medical secretaries you will provide a comprehensive secretarial  role to the Consultants and doctors. This includes audio typing letters, referrals, reports etc, working to deadlines in order to support our patients.

The ability to organise and prioritise work effectively is essential as is the ability to accurately and quickly type/correct clinical letters. Experience of audio typing, computer skills and medical terminology is required although previous work experience as a medical secretary is not essential for the right person. You will have an excellent telephone manner and able to prioritise competing demands, meeting deadlines throughout the week.

  • Excellent telephone skills - experience of talking to patients on the telephone & voicemail messages
  • Excellent writing skills including accurate typing skills, grammar and punctuation skills
  • NHS Experience
  • Secretarial Experience (10 points medical secretarial/7 points secretarial)
  • Experience of office work/reception work
Desirable criteria
  • Rheumatology/MSK/Neurology departmental experience
  • Medical Secretaries Diploma or equivalent qualification/experience
  • Knowledge/Experience of digital dictation software
  • Previous experience/knowledge of G2 Digital dictation software

Skills

  • Ability to work as a team/job share and work well with others
  • English GCSE A-C or equivalent
  • Experience prioritising, organisational and time management skills
  • Stress management skills/experience in busy working environment
