Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Urgent and Emergency Care Paediatric Nurse who is keen to develop their professional knowledge and clinical skills and undertake a Paediatric Trainee Urgent Care Practitioner post at St Richards Hospital. The role will involve 6 months supernumerary working alongside experienced Practitioners across University Hospitals Sussex in both the Emergency Departments and Urgent Treatment Centres.  There will be an expectation that you will travel across the different sites during your training period.

Under direct and indirect supervision, you will learn to assess, treat and diagnose paediatric patients presenting to the Children's ED and UTC with minor injuries and illness as well as more complex and chronic conditions.

This is a Band 6 training post but following successful completion of external and internal training and assessments, consisting of supervised clinical practice, academic study at Masters Level and feedback, the candidate will progress to working as an autonomous and independent Urgent Care Practitioner at Band 7 within the Children's ED and UTC. 

This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria. 

 

Main duties of the job

Demonstrate politeness, courtesy, respect, and sensitivity when interacting with children and young people (CYP), visitors, relatives, and colleagues, in line with the Trust’s Values and Behaviours Blueprint.

 

Communicate effectively with CYP of all ages and their families, adapting communication to meet the needs of those who may have barriers to understanding, such as language differences or learning disabilities.

 

Provide compassionate, clear information and emotional support.

 

Work collaboratively and cohesively with all team members to ensure the delivery of high-quality services to CYP and carers, recognising and respecting the differing needs of staff and patient groups.

 

Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times, adhering to the Data Protection Act and Caldicott principles to protect personal and staff information.

 

Accurately report written and verbal information regarding the care and well-being of CYP, demonstrating good computer literacy and IT skills.

 

Provide CYP and carers with relevant written and verbal care advice on matters relating to their treatment or care.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Service Delivery and Improvement

  • To work closely with the Paediatric Nurse Consultant, Urgent Care Practitioners (UCPs) and Clinicians so that the vision and the goals of the ED and UTC are translated into practice.
  • To work alongside experienced UCPs to proactively identify and participate in the implementation of changes to areas for improving healthcare practice and service delivery.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team to encourage learning and improvement and to ensure adoption of evidence-based practice and facilitate the delivery of high-quality care.
  • To promote and collaborate in the provision of an environment where patients, visitors and staff feel valued and supported.
  • To initiate and/or participate in research if required.
  • To ensure one’s practice is evidence based and in line with local, national and professional standards.
  • To develop and participate in audits relevant to high standards of patient care and relevant to the expanding the UCP role/service.
  • To promote and disseminate research findings to support clinical practice and education.
  • To undergo combined university and departmental programme of study in the assessment and management of minor injury and illness presentations.
  • To maintain, update and develop clinical competence and skills and assist in teaching within the Urgent Care Practitioner/ UTC team.
  • To attend regular UCP training days.
  • To act as mentor/ assessor for junior nursing/ medical students as required with scope of practice and level of competence.
  • To assist in teaching sessions as required to undergraduate and post-graduate staff within the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To attend operational and department huddle meetings to represent the department.
  • To identify areas of risk and poor quality, addressing these through appropriate governance structures.
  • To participate in health, safety, fire and quality audits and initiatives within the department.

Qualifications / Experience

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered Children's Nurse or Dual Trained Adult/Children's
  • Significant experience in urgent and emergency care
  • PSPA/Mentorship/supporting learners in practice course
  • Evidence of on-going professional development
  • Evidence of accredited study post qualification at Level 6/7
  • Up to date with all Statutory and Mandatory Trust training
  • Substantial post qualification experience in acute setting
  • PILS
  • Demonstrates understanding and competence in the theoretical and practical management of minor injuries, including fractures, burns, wounds, minor eye injuries, and soft tissue injuries
  • Trained and competent in the use of Patient Group Directions (PGDs)/Discretionary prescribing.
  • Knowledge and experience of using IT systems, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and library/information searches

  • Evidence of independent study in minor injury and illness
