We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity for an NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer to join our Clinical Coding Team at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.
This role is ideal for an experienced trainer who is passionate about developing others, committed to high‑quality clinical coding, and motivated to support coders at every stage of their professional journey.
You will play a central role in shaping the skills and confidence of our workforce, delivering structured training programmes, refresher sessions, classification updates, and specialty workshops. Your expertise will support coders from entry level through to achieving the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC) and beyond.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work closely with the Head of Clinical Coding to develop, deliver and continuously improve the Trust’s clinical coding training service. You will ensure that all clinical coders are confident, competent and supported in their roles, while promoting adherence to national quality standards and information governance requirements.
This includes designing and delivering a structured internal induction programme, creating and facilitating specialist workshops, delivering approved National Clinical Coding Standards training, and providing mentorship to both senior qualified coders and those undertaking the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).
Working collaboratively with the audit team and wider leadership group, you will identify learning needs, develop targeted action plans and implement SMART recommendations to drive improvements in coding quality, accuracy and consistency across all specialties.
You will act as a subject‑matter expert, offering authoritative advice on complex coding queries and applying national standards in ICD‑10, OPCS‑4 and associated guidance. You will also support the implementation of new standards and classification updates.
As a key link between coders, clinicians and management, you will promote engagement, improve documentation quality and ensure that coded data reliably supports reimbursement, performance reporting and clinical governance across the Trust.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Educated to degree level or equivalent/equivalent experience.
- Coding Foundation Diploma including specialty workshops: ▪ Neoplasm ▪ Vascular ▪ Obstetrics ▪ T & O ▪ Refresher course
- Accredited Clinical Coding Qualification, ACC
- Completion of the NHS Digital Clinical Coding Trainer Programme including TAP (Training Accreditation Programme).
- Evidence of Continuing professional development to postgraduate diploma equivalent
Desirable criteria

Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of delivering both face to face and remote training sessions
- Have experience in developing bespoke training packages to meet individual coder requirements
- Have experience coding across a wide range of speciality areas
- Experience of using Patient Administrations Systems and coding software e.g. Medicode
- Provision of expert coding advice on coding rules to all levels within the Trust.
- Have proven expertise and specialist knowledge in the application of rules and conventions of ICD 10 and OPCS -4 and a thorough understanding of national clinical coding standards for those classifications.

- Use MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint to an expert level.
