Job overview
We are very busy Emergency Department, treating on average 50,000 patients a year. We are looking for a Band 6 Paediatric Sister / Charge Nurse to join our pro-active and dynamic team that delivers 24 hour care.
Are you a qualified registered Children's Nurse with broad and relevant post registration experience at Band 5 or above in ED paediatric nursing or general paediatrics, Then this is your opportunity to help shape the development of children's designated emergency care area within Emergency Department.
The post is challenging but will provide you with varied experience and opportunities for professional development within a friendly and supportive team. You will be supported to work in all areas of the Emergency Department minors / triage / majors’ paediatrics and the resuscitation room. The paediatric nursing team work closely with the Emergency Nurse Practitioners who are an invaluable source of education, experience and skill in extended minor injuries and illness. There is also regular sim and in house training days which you will have the opportunity to attend.
Training and opportunities to broaden your experience will be available as appropriate. As a new member of the team we will support you to get your mentorship qualification, Advanced Paediatric Life Support Course, and with strong links to Universities we encourage and support staff to study at Level 6 / 7 level accredited courses.
2 x Part Time post 32 hours per week and 34.5 hours per week
Main duties of the job
Monitor standards of paediatric nursing care and take appropriate action to maintain and improve them. To respond to patients and their relatives/carers concerns as they arise and take remedial action as required. To provide children and carers/parents on-going referrals for support/treatments when necessary in the community. To provide assessment, recognition, prioritisation and evaluation of children with minor injuries /serious illness /injury presenting for urgent care. To manage paediatric minor illnesses and minor injuries within scope of competency using PGD where available and seek clinical support from U&EC consultants or paediatric consultants or senior paediatric doctor when required. To effectively manage and develop the nursing team within the Urgent and Emergency centre and provide professional and clinical leadership in the delivery of high quality, safe, cost effective care to children and families. To develop the role of the Paediatric Nurse Practitioner/ Paediatric Emergency Nurse Practitioner, assisting in meeting the standard of all children being assessed, treated and discharged / admitted within 4 hours of arrival.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Registered Nurse and hold active registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Degree level qualification relevant to role
- Professional qualification and training to lead the clinical team with relevant knowledge and skills for specialist area
- Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc
Desirable criteria
- Management or leadership qualification or training
- Education and training qualification
- Quality improvement training and qualification
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience in nursing care, knowledge and expertise relevant to the clinical area within NHS or relevant health care organisation
- Experience in the take charge role and be able to lead a shift in the clinical area, demonstrating the ability to manage the clinical area, lead people and deal with emergencies and queries effectively
Desirable criteria
- Experience in leading a team or service change/QI project
