Job overview

We are looking for an outstanding Radiographer who has strong leadership qualities and is hardworking, flexible and highly motivated to join our busy friendly and supportive team; the successful candidates will rotate through all aspects of Radiotherapy treatment and pre-treatment CT located at Eastbourne General Hospital, becoming an integral part of our extensive multi-disciplinary team.

Main duties of the job

The Sussex Cancer Centre are taking every opportunity to improve the patient experience by expanding our services to enable our teams to work in the communities where our patients live, providing the most advanced cancer services close to their homes, therefore currently the Eastbourne radiotherapy department has a mixed portfolio of equipment. We have three sites in total:

At Royal Sussex County Hospital, Elekta Precise & Synergy Platform Linacs, Flexitron HDR, Phillips Brilliance Big Bore CT with virtual simulation. At our first linked treatment facility within Brighton: two high spec Accuray TomoTherapy units at the Preston Park Radiotherapy Centre. At our second linked treatment facility in Eastbourne, East Sussex, we will be providing comprehensive cancer services using 2 Elekta Versa HD treatment units with FFF capabilities and a second CT scanner to support this service.

The radiotherapy service is registered to ISO 9001:2015 and we are developing our reputation as a centre of excellence in treatment and Radiotherapy Research Trials. The Centre is committed to patient involvement and service improvement. We are also keen to provide training opportunities for all staff.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

ROLE SUMMARY

The post holder for all parts of this job description will require an advanced understanding and knowledge of the radiotherapy process and be a clinical expert in Radiotherapy. They will have responsibilities within the role they are employed to ensure good communication, good understanding of safety, excellent patient care, development under evidence base practice and teaching skills for all aspects of their job.

The postholder will be designated areas of technical or process responsibilities and will have the remit to ensure high standards are met and efficient processes are put into place for radiotherapy. The postholder will be expected to follow a defined project process when commencing new methods of working.

Lead Radiographer on treatment machine and calculations:

The post holder is the clinical specialist for the calculating and treatment of cancer patients at the Eastbourne Radiotherapy Centre and will be in charge of a treatment unit and team of staff. The post holder will be expected to have good knowledge of Pre-treatment planning, CT and Simulation. The post holder requires advanced clinical knowledge of radiotherapy treatment procedures, radiation tolerances for human tissue, and physiological reactions due to exposure (side effects). The post holder will  practise in accordance with current legislation governing the use of ionising radiation. The postholder must be able to manage their team and students, ensuring efficient and safe patient care. The postholder must have the ability to identify and develop their team.  An advanced level of competence is required in the use of a wide range of highly complex technical and computerised systems, including:

  • Equipment for the delivery of high dose radiation treatment - multi energy, dual modality Linear Accelerators (LAs), Tomotherapy and Brachytherapy treatment units
  • 2D & 3D Imaging system and the associated image matching programme for treatment field verification and evaluation procedures during radiotherapy treatment
  • Quality assurance (QA) equipment for daily tolerance checks

 

Person specification

Experience Senior Radiographer

Essential criteria
  • Must have a minimum of 18 months experience and have evidence of CPD
  • BSc [Hons] in Therapeutic Radiography
  • Relevant short specialist courses in Radiotherapy
Desirable criteria
  • Senior Radiographer

HCPC

  • HPC Registration

  • Dosimetry experience
