Main duties of the job

As Clinical Lead, you’ll provide visible and supportive leadership across our specialist palliative care service. You’ll use your advanced clinical skills to manage complex cases, mentor colleagues, and ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care. You’ll work collaboratively with partners across health and social care to deliver seamless, personalised support for patients and families. We’re looking for someone who leads with empathy, inspires confidence, and is committed to continuous improvement.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a key leadership role within the Midhurst Macmillan Service, where you’ll oversee the delivery of high-quality palliative and end-of-life care across the community. You’ll lead a skilled multidisciplinary team, providing expert clinical oversight and supporting staff through supervision, mentorship, and reflective practice.

You’ll be responsible for managing complex patient care, ensuring services are safe, responsive, and person-centred. You’ll contribute to service development, governance, and strategic planning, working closely with GPs, hospices, acute trusts, and voluntary sector partners to ensure joined-up care pathways and equitable access.

Person specification

Qualifications and/or professional registration

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse (Adult) – current NMC registration
  • Postgraduate level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Advanced Physical Assessment (Masters module) or willing to work towards
  • Independent/Non-medical Prescriber or willing to work towards
  • Practice Assessor/Mentorship qualification
  • Evidence of continuous professional, clinical and leadership development
Desirable criteria
  • Master’s degree (or working towards)
  • Community Specialist Practice qualification (District Nursing or equivalent)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive clinical experience, including case management and complex patient care
  • Specialist experience in palliative and end-of-life care or long-term condition management
  • Experience of clinical leadership at senior level, including line management and staff development
  • Evidence of ability to maintain and monitor high standards of care
  • Experience of partnership working across organisational boundaries (e.g. Primary Care, Acute, Social Care, Voluntary Sector)
  • Experience of contributing to or leading service development, quality improvement or innovation projects
  • Experience in governance processes (e.g. incident management, audit, complaints handling, risk assessment)
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of drafting or implementing service plans, policies or standard operating procedures

  • Car driver with access to a vehicle for work purposes, unless under Equality Act
