Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Rehabilitation Engineering Service based at Chailey Clinical Services for a motivated team player to join the team in the role of Senior Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer.
This post is situated within a specialist paediatric Rehabilitation Engineering Service. The client group currently served have severe and complex physical disabilities and therefore require bespoke assistive technology (AT) solutions in order to undertake activities of daily living. The equipment has a clinical role in the care of the child or young person helping to support to reduce the progression of deformity in particular that associated with seating, standing and lying.
RES provides clinical support to the pupils of Chailey Heritage School and a large number of mainly paediatric outpatients referred from the Sussex area whose local services who cannot meet these clients’ needs.
You will be working in a team of Clinical Scientists, Rehabilitation Engineers, Technicians and administrate staff to design, develop, manufacture and modify assistive technology to support our clients with their posture and daily activities.
Main duties of the job
You will deliver high quality, client focused, specialist clinical assessment and prescription of assistive technology to children, young people or adults referred to the clinics and services at Chailey Clinical Services (CCS).
You will be required to identify suitable commercially available equipment or design, develop and manufacture equipment, or modify and adapt existing equipment to an agreed solution. A large portion of this role will involve the assessment for, design of, manufacture and delivery of custom moulded seating or custom equipment.
Your role will be to attend specialist clinics on and off site as a senior engineer and as part of a multidisciplinary team assess the client. In clinics you will provide specialist input.
You will provide a technical advisory role to other staff in the department, service, CCS and as appropriate outside agencies.
You will be part of the senior B7 team within the department and take on responsibilities and work as appropriate.

The post holder will be expected :

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- First degree in appropriate engineering or related discipline
- MSc/MPhil level qualification in relevant area or experience to this level
- Registered Clinical Technologist on the VRCT or the Academy for Healthcare Science, Healthcare Science Practitioner Register OR Registration or eligible for registration as a Clinical Scientist following completion of STP scheme
- Professional Membership of an Engineering Institution (eg IPEM, IMechE, IET)
Desirable criteria
- Incorporated Engineer (RE)
- Qualification in Rehabilitation Engineering (RE)
Experience
Essential criteria
- Significant experience in Rehabilitation Engineering working independently and as part of a team or completion of STP Rehabilitation Engineering specialism or equivalent in order to register with HCPC as a clinical scientist
- Team working (including multidisciplinary) in delivering clinical services
- Working with children, young people and adults with complex disabilities
- Knowledge of manufacturing using a range of techniques or materials
Desirable criteria
- Provision of a range of specialist assistive technology (e.g postural management equipment, daily living equipment, EAT)
- Providing leadership within the team and supporting senior management as appropriate
- Working within and developing quality systems
- Ability to assess for, cast, design, manufacture, assemble and deliver custom countered seating
Skills
Essential criteria
- Able to work flexibly, efficiently and effectively to organise and prioritise own work and those of other members of staff
- To convey complex information to staff of other disciplines and users/cares in a manner in which it is understood.
- Knowledge and experience of using risk management in all aspects of work
- Teaching / training skills
Desirable criteria
- Computer Aided Design (CAD) &/or Computer Aided Manufacture (CAM), 3d printing, scanning knowledge
- Knowledge and understanding of quality management systems
