Job overview

We are a small friendly team who are committed to providing high quality care to our patients and are seeking a Nurse Unit Team Manager to work in our Outpatient Oncology / Haematology Unit on the Judy Beard Day Unit at Conquest Hospital. 

The unit comprises of 18 patient treatment chairs/ bed, used to safely deliver, and administer Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) and life supporting treatments.

You will need to provide strong leadership, possess excellent communication skills and be able to develop and support staff with clinical and professional expertise. You will also be expected to function effectively under pressure without compromising standards of care and professionalism. 

You must also have advanced clinical knowledge and skills, be willing to participate in research and audit projects and will also be expected to work with a certain amount of autonomy.  In return you will be offered excellent managerial support and commitment to both your personal and professional development.

 You must be a 1st level Registered Nurse with significant experience at Band 6 Team Leader level. Ideally you will be educated to a degree level or be working towards a degree. The Management/leadership qualification/training Education/teaching/mentorship/coaching qualification/training is essential as is an awareness of the current professional, research and practice issues and an understanding of modern human resource management.

 

An good understanding of oncology/haematology treatments, reactions and prescribing would be beneficial, but not essential. The expectation would be to develop these once the general matron/ward management skills and knowledge are embedded.

Your working pattern will be fulltime working four shifts, between the hours of 08:00 – 18:00 over a six-day period covering Monday – Saturday, thus requiring flexibility to cover the needs of the service

Main duties of the job

The Nurse Team Manager is responsible for delivering high quality, safe patient care for the Ward/Unit and for providing safe, effective clinical and managerial leadership including the organisation of the department, nursing workforce and prioritisation of patient assessment, care and treatments.

An good understanding of oncology/haematology treatments, reactions and prescribing would be beneficial, but not essential. The expectation would be to develop these once the general matron/ward management skills and knowledge are embedded.

A main focus of the role will be to take responsibility to ensure optimal quality care and patient experience, facilitating safe and timely procedures at all times, as specified by National and Local Performance Targets. To maintain target times the post holder will actively participate in the implementation of the local, divisional and trust escalation policies.

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse and hold active registration with Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Degree level qualification relevant to role
  • Professional qualification and training to lead the clinical team with relevant knowledge and skills for specialist area
  • Management/leadership qualification/training
  • Education/teaching/mentorship/coaching qualification/training
  • Evidence of mandatory and statutory essential training skills, for example, Basic Life Support, manual handling, infection control, fire etc
Desirable criteria
  • Masters level study relevant to role
  • Quality improvement/project or service change training and qualification
  • Restorative/Clinical supervision training

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in nursing care, knowledge and expertise relevant to the clinical area within NHS or relevant health care organisation
  • Experience in a leadership role and be able to lead a team, demonstrating the ability to manage the clinical area, lead /manage people and deal with emergencies and queries effectively
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in Oncology / Haematology
