Job overview

To be responsible for the day to day running and management of staff within the Physiotherapy Service.

Working within the Physiotherapy outpatient team, taking the responsibility for referrals and treatment of members of the public into the Physiotherapy department.

To have overall responsibility for the training and development of staff.

To take a leading role in the advanced assessment, clinical diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex and/or chronic presentation.

To provide an effective high-quality service and take a lead role in supervision and teaching of physiotherapists/technicians/assistants.

To provide skilled team leadership and be responsible for service development within Physiotherapy role, using any evidence-based practice and national guidelines.

To implement policy and policy changes in own clinical area and to set and monitor standards of practice.

To undertake evidence-based projects, including recommendations for change in practice and to lead in appropriate departmental research in this clinical area.
Roles available across the whole of West Sussex, Brighton and Hove, inclusive of full and part-time/ fixed term/ secondment/ job share opportunities. Sites include Worthing/Brighton/ Hove/ Haywards Heath/ Crawley/ Horsham/ Bognor Regis.
Main duties of the job
-
Work in partnership with Service Managers to promote safe working practices and well-being of patients referred in accordance with the Health & Safety Regulations and Trust Policies.

Contribute to the strategic development of the service and speciality. This includes input into the service annual business plan and the formulation of relevant business cases and integration with the whole Musculoskeletal service aims.

To ensure designated staff implement policy and service developmental changes.

To ensure that the service responds to national initiatives and policy within the framework of Clinical Governance including clinical effectiveness, evidence-based health care, managing clinical risk, and Research & Development issues.

To work a rostered 7-day service when implemented.

To advise on the management of frequent and long-term sickness absence and suitable rehabilitation programme were agreed or report back to Occupational Health team as appropriate.

To be an active member of the formal departmental training programme by attending in-service sessions, delivering and attending training sessions both in house and externally and undertaking reflective practice.

To be responsible for the Line Management of staff, including recruitment, career development, performance and work evaluation.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To carry out assessment of patients as an autonomous practitioner, including those with complex presentations and to use clinical reasoning skills, knowledge of evidence-based practice and clinical expertise to determine appropriate care plans utilising specialist treatment skills and options.

To devise an individualised Physiotherapy management and/or treatment plan, using clinical reasoning skills to utilise a range of treatment options in formulating a specialised programme of care.

Always maintain patient confidentiality and dignity and support peoples’ equality, diversity, and rights.

To be responsible for implementing within clinical practice, the relevant standards, and policies.

To maintain a high standard of clinical care using evidence-based practices and evaluates the outcomes.

To be responsible as an autonomous practitioner to undertake a significant clinical caseload.

To provide leadership for the Physiotherapy service, being available for expert advice and guidance on complex patients.

To maintain professionalism in public/ rehab/ treatment centre areas.

To be responsible for the safe use of equipment used in carrying out Physiotherapy duties, adhering to the departments medical devices policy. Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Degree in Physiotherapy or BSc (Hons)
- HCPC Registration
- Up to date professional development portfolio
Desirable criteria
- Member of relevant professional network
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience at Clinical specialist level
- Experience of supervising staff and students
- Involvement in carrying out clinical audit including the co-ordination and evaluation of, and the use of findings to make service developments
- Proven understanding of clinical governance with risk management, its importance and an awareness of how it is carried out
- Experience of operational management of staff e.g. personnel procedures
- Experience of line management of staff and students, including appraisals, supervision and training
- Experience of service development
- Experience of working clinically as a Band 6 musculoskeletal physiotherapist for a period of at least 2 years
- MSc equivalent level of education/ experience and evidence of relevant post graduate courses/CPD and reflective practice
- Research background within a clinical environment
- Member of CSP special interest group
- Experience representing and promoting physiotherapy at a senior management level, Trust wide
- Experience in motivating and empowering staff
- Management/leadership experience
- Experience of data collection, report writing.
Desirable criteria
- Experience of lecturing to MDT
- Operational management experience
- To have an understanding of the implementation of relevant HR policies for staff management.
- Experience of working within the NHS is desirable
Skills
Essential criteria
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships with (profession) and multidisciplinary teams

- Understanding of MSK services and where they sit within national service frameworks and NICE guidelines
