Job overview

The post holder will assist the Pathology IT department in providing advice across all specialties in Pathology.   

Manage and develop existing and future electronic communications between diagnostic analytical equipment, their controller devices/servers (Diagnostic Equipment Systems (DES)) and the clinical systems they serve. E.g. Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), Point of Care Testing (POCT) systems and Blood Tracking Systems. Manage and maintain the Quality Management Systems around Pathology IT to ensure safe, effective, professional practice in the department that meets regulatory and accreditation compliance for Laboratories, Transfusable blood and Point of Care Testing devices. This includes, as a minimum, ISO 15189 Clinical Laboratory Accreditation Standards and Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) Blood Safety and Quality Regulations 2005.  Manage and develop the electronic “Lab to Lab” systems that facilitate referrals of patient’s samples for specialist testing both within and outside of the Sussex Pathology Network.  

Main duties of the job

Support with the IT administration of analytical platforms that underpin Pathology Service delivery.  Your part in the maintenance, change management and evaluation of new analytical platforms is a key requirement.  This role also involves advising and working with the Pathology IT Lead(s) to develop operational and strategic solutions for clinical analytical technologies. This is to ensure operational continuity at all times, manage cost, manage change and implement the most effective strategies for adopting new technology.  This role also involves advising and working with the Pathology IT Lead and the Pathology Quality Manager to develop the Pathology IT Quality systems that are in line with, and supportive of, wider departmental objectives.  The appropriate operation of IT change control procedures, management of that change and performance of IT audit is a key responsibility of this role.  T

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in a healthcare environment    Scientific knowledge Up to date, comprehensive knowledge of all areas within all pathology disciplines. This includes an excellent understanding of work processes, the technical/scientific foundation for that work. Practical laboratory Experience Significant experience in a pathology discipline. Technical A well-developed knowledge of Information technology used to support lab work processes, analytical equipment and clinical needs of the service, operatives and users. This is supported by experience in a computer support role in a clinical laboratory environment. Practical Experience of Clinical Databases and their management. A specialist knowledge of Commercial analytical equipment including their human and data interfaces. Experience of NHS IT networks, security models and NHS data communication pathways. Professional knowledge Awareness and practical experience of applying Caldicott Guidelines for Information Governance and Security and the Data Protection Act. Understanding of the impact of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) and legislation- Statutory Instrument 2005 No. 50 relating to blood safety and quality. Understanding of UKAS: Medical Laboratory accreditation (ISO 15189) Extensive knowledge of IT interoperability and electronic messaging standards in Healthcare.

  • Requirement for advanced IT skills and knowledge to fulfil a primary responsibility for planning, evaluation, and daily administration of the Laboratory Information System and a wide range of pathology IT systems     Strong ability to use and manipulate a variety of data analysis tools to interrogate clinical databases for business activity, clinical queries and trending.   Responding to and dealing with any troubleshooting required to maintain core functioning of the pathology lab  Daily use of standard office software to produce reports, spreadsheets, proprietary databases, presentations, collating highly complex information from a variety of sources.     Strong skills with Keyboard, e-mail, Intranet, Internet, ftp services, telnet, remote access software, and macros.     An understanding of security permissions policies, firewalls, electronic document management, and server management utilities    Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines     Excellent time management skills.
