Job overview

An exciting position has arisen for a band 7 Senior Charge Nurse within the Emergency Department at Worthing Hospital.

This type 1 emergency department provides care for both adult and paediatric patients within main ED and the Urgent Treatment Centre.

The post holder will be ensuring quality and safety standards are met throughout the department and require strong leadership skills. They will be expected to facilitate, oversee and be responsible for the effective management and movement of patients through all the emergency acute care areas, combining considerable experience, clinical relationships, utilisation of staff and available resources appropriately whilst adhering to all departmental, Trust and Government policies. They will be expected to ensure all patients receive a high standard of specialist nursing care.

The post holder will be a clinical expert and an excellent role model, providing a clear focus for clinical leadership, and be responsible for ensuring  excellence through clinical care managing, teaching and encouraging professional development for all staff whilst meeting the Emergency Department Clinical Quality Indicators, KPI’s and meeting the National Performance Standards. Full shift rotation required.

Main duties of the job

  • To work collaboratively with the Lead Consultant to consistently maintain effective flow and optimal allocation of patients throughout the ED.
  • To  promote delivery of the highest standards of professional nursing care to all patients presenting to the Emergency Department and Urgent treatment centre (UTC).
  • To monitor and ensure that staff are focused on maintaining high quality patient care regardless of environmental and departmental pressures. 
  • Establish and maintain effective communications with all staff, patients, relatives and members of the public and be the recognised senior nurse team member on shift for the resolution of any patient or staffing concerns, 
  • To act as a point of reference and advocate for patients throughout their journey in the ED.
  • To oversee  quality and safety audits.
  • To manage a team of staff managing appraisals, health and well being, capability and disciplinary issues.
  • To support ED matrons with managing change, embracing progress and delivering NHS emergency care goals.
  • To have relevant knowledge and insight of  clinical governance monitoring for the ED and deliver improvements.
  • Respond to complaints, PALS concerns and datix's.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively in an acute, hostile, antagonistic or highly emotive atmosphere/environment.
  •  Communicate undesirable, sensitive and often difficult information to patients, carers, other staff, the general public and trust personnel.

Essential criteria
  • NMC registration with current PIN
  • Emergency care experience
  • Substantial experience at Band 6 in acute care setting
  • Evidence of academic qualification relating to Emergency Care

Experience and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • ENB 998 / Mentorship qualification or equivalent
  • Emergency Care Pathway
  • Completed Degree level education including relevant Emergency Care modules in Admission and Trauma
  • Completion of National Curriculum and Competency Framework in Emergency Nursing Level
  • Completion of Paediatric Immediate Life Support (PILS)
  • Completion of Adult Immediate Life Support (ALS)
  • Evidence of extensive professional development since qualification.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development specific to ED
  • Evidence of training/experience with paediatric patients
  • Evidence of training/experience with patients experiencing mental health crisis
  • Leadership qualification or equivalent NVQ assessor
  • Educated to Masters level
  • Completion of Level 2 Emergency Nursing Competency Framework
  • Completion of Advanced clinical courses including EPLS, ALS, ATLS.
  • Critical care experience
  • Experience of supervision of others
  • Experience at Band 7 level in Emergency Department
