Job overview

Ward 27 is a 34 bedded area within which are 16 Higher Observation Beds. The ward cares for individuals requiring elective, acute and trauma Cardiac and Thoracic surgical needs.

We are looking for 2 highly motivated nursing assistants to join our team. The individuals will be responsible  for supporting the Registered nurse and other Multidisciplinary team members in the delivery of direct patient care. 

 

Main duties of the job

We are looking for individuals  who can work well within our team, are reliable, and have a passion for the provision of high quality nursing care to improve patient experience.

In return we will of a supernumerary induction period and continuing support and personal development.

The individuals will be responsible for supporting the registered nurse in the delivery  of direct patient care. This is assisting in meeting patient comfort within the Cardiac and Thoracic nursing nursing specialty.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Communications

Ensure that communication with patients, relatives and service users is conducted in a courteous, caring, sensitive and appropriate manner, seeking support from the Registered Nurse as appropriate, including contributing to the emotional support of patients who appear to be or are identified as anxious, upset, frightened or worried.

Support patients and their families/carers, through communicating routine and non-routine information using a variety of methods, displaying tact and empathy, recognising the needs for alternative methods of communication to ensure effective understanding where there may be barriers to understanding.

Contribute to the effective routine communication between members of the multi-disciplinary team, taking personal responsibility to update and share information.

Patient Care / Clinical Services
• Undertake delegated clinical assessments (which will require developed physical skills, 
speed and accuracy) ensuring that results are given to the Registered Nurse in a timely 
manner to facilitate prompt analysis and assessment.
• Assess and plan care within appropriate boundaries of job role.
• Assess patient condition through observations/test results and instigate emergency 
procedures as appropriate. 
• Assist patients to undertake normal activities of daily living where necessary and 
supports them with fundamental care such as eating and drinking and toileting. 
• Practice safe moving and handling procedures when assisting patients with mobility, 
using appropriate equipment e.g. glide sheets, which will require physical skills obtained 
through practice. Proficient and competent using necessary equipment to undertake 
tasks e.g. using hoists etc. and point of care testing.

• Escort patients to other hospital departments in accordance with Trust/Group
procedures, ensuring their privacy and dignity is maintained at all times

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience (through placements or employment) of working in a busy environment.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in a healthcare setting

Education

Essential criteria
  • Maths and English Qualification.
  • NVQ level 2 or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Care Certificate
  • Evidence of continued development

Communication

Essential criteria
  • Good communication - verbal/written
  • Be able to work on own initiative
  • Works well with in a team
  • Shows desire and capability to develop in nursing care standards.
  • Show knowledge in health and safety issues (for example, aware of risk assessments
