Job overview

Applications are invited for the Post of Trust Registrar Grade in Cardiothoracic Surgery, based at Castle Hill Hospital commencing on ASAP for a period of 6+6 months initially, extendable on satisfactory performance. This post does not attract a National Training Number. As a Trust Doctor working with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, you will be entitled to receive the following:

 

• A named Educational Supervisor

• 10 Study Days Leave per annum + Annual Leave allowance

• £500 of Study Leave Allowance per annum

• Access to an e-portfolio

• An assigned Appraiser and access to Multi-Source Feedback 360° (if required) and an Appraisal System

Main duties of the job

You will participate in 1/9 on-call rota. On call commitments are 12 hours of resident on-call, covering both Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery (elective, acute and emergency referrals), as well as patients in cardiac ICU.  This current post starts is 6-months in the first instance, possibly extendable to max of 12 months, subject to satisfactory performance. Following a total of 12 months, this post will be re-advertised. The successful candidate should have a minimum of 3 months’ Cardiothoracic experience and committed to a cardiothoracic career, subject to CV review and interview. The successful candidate will receive training and career progression support in keeping with their abilities and needs. We can support registrars with ST3 to ST5 level educational needs and we would consider applications from trainees who have completed a type 1 training programme (or equivalent) and who wish to broaden their experience in preparation for their first consultant post.

Professional Registration

Essential criteria
  • • Full Registration with the GMC

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • • MRCS(UK) or equivalent qualification
  • • Valid ALS certificate
Desirable criteria
  • • Postgraduate degree: e.g. MD, PhD
  • • Postgraduate qualification in Education or significant experience in post graduate training

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to offer sound clinical opinion on range of acute medical conditions
  • • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • • 3-12 months of practical experience in Cardiothoracic Surgery
Desirable criteria
  • • Current ATLS and/ or CALS training

Management and Administration Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Ability to lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit
  • • Ability to organise, prioritise and manage high intensity workload
Desirable criteria
  • • Ability to develop, present and operationalise coherent ideas for service development/ delivery

Teaching, Audit and Research

  • • Evidence of participation in audit
  • • Ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients
Desirable criteria
  • • Evidence of having conducted a practice-changing audit
  • • Experience of teaching/ training in clinical courses e.g. IMPACT Course, Faculty, ALS Instructor, ALERT Instructor
  • • Original peer-reviewed research publications
