Job overview
Undertakes a range of cardiac diagnostic tests and procedures including specialist tests. Interprets test results and provides accurate factual reports for clinicians. Provides clinical supervision and training for junior staff and other healthcare professionals. Participates in an out of hours on-call rota for emergency cardiac intervention
Main duties of the job
- Undertakes a wide range of cardiac diagnostic tests, including specialist cardiac clinical physiological tests and procedures performed in a tertiary cardiac center.
- Conducts pacemaker and ICD follow up clinics, analysing function, assessing battery status and making safe and appropriate changes to optimise the function and longevity of the device. Refers patient to a clinician when appropriate.
- Analyzes complex intra cardiac pressures during invasive procedures, informing clinicians of any changes or abnormalities.
- Undertakes physiologist lead exercise tolerance testing, following established national and local policies/procedures. Interprets test results and provides an accurate factual report.

Essential criteria
- Cardiac Clinical Physiology Degree or equivalent level with appropriate experience
- State Registration current or eligible to apply for.
Desirable criteria
- Formal qualification for specialist area BHRS for Pacing OR eligible and willing to work towards a formal qualification within a specified time.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Post registration experience as a cardiac physiologist including experience of specialist area
- Experience of supervision/training of junior staff and other healthcare professionals.
- Previous experience of staff supervision, including prioritising and allocating duties
Skills and Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge of a full range of diagnostic tests as detailed in the job description
- Able to perform cardiac diagnostic tests unsupervised and produces a factual report.
- Able to interpret test results
- For specialist pacemaker/ICD physiologists - able to analyse a range of complex measurements and make appropriate decisions
- Able to prioritise own work and that of junior staff.
- Capable of supervising and assisting with the training of trainee physiologists
- Knowledge of national and local codes of practice/protocols
- Appreciates the need for confidentiality
- IT skills necessary for accurate documentation of tests and reports.
