Job overview
A very exciting opportunity has arisen for experienced registered neonatal nurse to join our substantial and supportive team. Our Neonatal Unit is creating a Band 7 Palliative and Bereavement Lead Nurse to facilitate the education and nursing provision to enable them to support parents and families of the sick or premature neonate, families and their unborn baby who require palliative, complex and end of life care and those families that require continuing bereavement care.
We are looking for highly motivated and dynamic Neonatal Nurse who can provide an experienced liaison route for all professionals in the MDT, working in collaboration in order to achieve the best care for our group of babies and families.
Main duties of the job
To facilitate the education and nursing provision to enable them to support parents and families of the sick or premature neonate, families and their unborn baby who require palliative, complex and end of life care and those families that require continuing bereavement care.
You will be an expert in this field and take the role of a key worker for these families and provide on-going and continuing support and facilitate family centered care.
The specialist nurse will provide an experienced liaison route for all professionals in the MDT, working in collaboration in order to achieve the best care for this group of babies and families. The specialist nurse will receive referrals (antenatal) and make direct referrals to doctors, GP’s, HV’s, Community Nursing Teams, children’s hospices and other Allied Health Professionals.
The specialist nurse will ensure there is early identification of appropriate babies, ensuring they are being cared for in the most suitable environment. Whilst liaising and work closely with internal and external MDT to ensure smooth transition to other services and providers.
The Palliative & Bereavement Lead will provide clinical leadership within the neonatal service and will play an integral part in service delivery and development. They will be pivotal in developing and delivering an education programme around baby loss and bereavement to all health care professionals.

The Palliative & Bereavement Lead will provide clinical leadership within the neonatal service and will play an integral part in service delivery and development. They will be pivotal in developing and delivering an education programme around baby loss and bereavement to all health care professionals.
In addition, the successful candidate will have the skills and personality to have a positive impact on the working days of colleagues, recognising openly good practice and effort whilst at the same time challenging practice constructively and supportively where necessary.

Education & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- • Registered Nurse - Child or Adult Branch or registered Midwife
- • Qualification in Speciality – Neonatology 405 or equivalent
- • Mentorship preparation programme or equivalent e.g. 997 / 998, or on live register of mentors
- • Evidence of professional self-development
- • Degree or equivalent level of education or equivalent experience
- • Competent in the use on standard IT packages and the aptitude to learn how to use new IT systems,
Desirable criteria
- • Evidence of further study/knowledge at master’s level or equivalent.
- • Recognised leadership qualification or equivalent experience
- • Specialist training in bereavement care
- • Coaching and counselling qualification
- • Evidence of commitment to continuous learning and application in practice.

Knowledge, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- • Understanding of Information Governance and Confidentiality
- • Ability to support and lead the team in complex and challenging clinical situations
- • Experience of working with families with life shortening illness/bereavement/ end of care needs.
- • Evidence based knowledge of current clinical and professional issues related to neonatal palliative and end of life care.
- • Experience of assessment, development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care for patients/service-users/staff demonstrating knowledge of specific needs
- • Experience of change management
