Job overview

Consultant in Critical Care | Basildon

Our Acute Critical Care service at Basildon offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and growing network of five units across three Mid and South Essex sites. Together, we manage the equivalent of 46 Level 3 beds (with flexible Level 2 capacity) and provide care for over 2,500 patients annually, within a collaborative and forward-thinking directorate.

Supported by strong executive and operational leadership, we are committed to fully meeting GPICS standards and delivering an ambitious expansion strategy. Recent developments include £10m recurrent funding to support service growth and a £3.5m investment in a standardised electronic patient record (Metavision). Future plans include further expansion and major capital redevelopment of our Critical Care units.

In this role, you will work within a closed-unit model, taking responsibility for key decisions regarding patient admission, discharge, and day-to-day management. You will ensure timely admissions, consultant-led care planning, and prompt consultant reviews for all patients.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to service development, drive positive change, and deliver high-quality care within an innovative and supportive Critical Care environment.

If you are motivated to make a difference, we encourage you to apply.

Main duties of the job

  • Ensure appropriate admission to Critical Care, with all decisions discussed with a Critical Care Consultant and timely admission within 4 hours
  • Maintain high‑quality consultant‑led care, including a documented care plan on admission and in‑person review within 12 hours
  • Work within a closed unit model, taking responsibility for admission, discharge, and day‑to‑day patient management alongside specialty teams
  • Participate in MDT meetings, provide expert advice, and lead sensitive discussions on treatment escalation, resuscitation, and end‑of‑life care
  • Supervise and train junior doctors, ensuring strong consultant oversight and high standards of clinical practice

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust
