Specialty Doctor
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.
We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.
Job overview
Applications are invited for a new post for a Specialty Doctor Physician in Diabetes, Endocrinology and General Internal Medicine.
The Endocrinology Team currently consists of three Consultants (Lead Dr Rehman Khan), and one Acute Physician with interest in Endocrinology. The junior clinical team comprises two Specialist Registrars, two Trust grade doctors, one CMT trainee and two FY1 trainees. There is a Diabetes Specialist Nurse team consisting of four FTE and support staff.
The team runs a full range of diabetic clinics including weekly diabetic and endocrine antenatal clinics, 4 diabetes foot clinics per week, 3 Endocrine weekly clinics, a transition diabetes clinic (jointly with paediatrics), a monthly thyroid cancer clinic, insulin pump clinics (lead Dr Choo-Kang). Additionally, three weekly diabetic clinic are run with community diabetes service for general diabetes care. The community diabetes service is supported by regular Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings (3 consultants, 6 DSNs and specialist diabetes dietician) to discuss complex and challenging cases and to agree consensus management plans.
A twice monthly endocrine MDT meeting is held (endocrinologists, surgeons, pathologist and radiologists) to discuss appropriate cases.
Main duties of the job
There is a designated Diabetes and Endocrinology ward where patients with complications such as Diabetic foot disease, Cushing’s disease, diabetic emergencies and other complications are admitted.
You will partake in acute unselected medical takes and clerk acutely ill patients and support junior doctors to manage such emergency admission patients
You will participate in departmental and Trust clinical governance and audit meetings, participate in CPD activity, engage in the appraisal process and maintain professionalism at all times.
You will actively participate in various Trust wide teaching and training events to junior doctors, medical students and allied health professionals.
Youwill participate in other duties as deemed necessary and directed by designated consultant for the care of the patient.

- You will provision for in patient care on the endocrinology ward working in the firm structure for a named consultant
- You will have day-to-day supervisory responsibility for patients on the ward, participate in daily ward rounds to review patients, maintain progress notes, be a safe prescriber, request and act on the results of appropriate and relevant investigations, perform necessary bedside procedures to avoid delays to patient care.
- You will work closely with the medical and nursing team on all wards.
- You will provide support and supervision to the junior doctors FY, IMT & other doctors when attending to inpatients and manage patients in accordance with the Trust values while adhering to the local and national protocols and guidelines
- You will be required to attend resuscitation training and complete ALS and participate as member of the cardiac arrest team.
