Consultant
Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.
We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.
Job overview
The Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist with a Specialist Interest in Bowel Cancer Screening Programme and EMR polypectomy who will be based at Basildon University Hospital, with cross-site working across Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust as required.
The post holder will work closely with colorectal surgery, oncology, radiology, anaesthetics, and specialist nursing teams, contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings (colorectal and complex Polyp MDTs) and supporting streamlined patient pathways.
The consultant will also play a role in education and training, supporting endoscopy training where appropriate, supervising gastroenterology trainees and endoscopy staff, and contributing to departmental teaching programmes.
The role includes active participation in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, appraisal, and revalidation, with an expectation of professional leadership, innovation, and commitment to delivering excellent patient-centred care in line with the values of Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust.
This post will also support Outpatient transformation and Gastroenterology and Endoscopy recovery and help the department to achieve the referral to treatment (RTT) 18-week targets, 2-week wait, and 28, 31 and 62 day faster diagnostic standards reducing diagnostic and cancer waiting times.
Main duties of the job
The primary focus of the role is the delivery and further development of Bowel Cancer Screening Programme within the Trust. The successful candidate should have both subspecialty interest in BCSP and management of complex polyps (EMR). They will contribute to audit and service improvement plans in line with JAG and BCSP.
In addition to advanced endoscopy, the postholder will contribute to general gastroenterology services, including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, and participation in the gastroenterology on-call rota. The balance of clinical activity will reflect the advanced endoscopy nature of the post, with a significant proportion of programmed activities allocated to BCSP.
A commitment to Endoscopy is expected and with appropriate allocation in the job plan the candidate will make an equal contribution to the care of Gastroenterology inpatients and the out-of-hours GI-Bleed endoscopy service which is 1:7 at present with plans to transition to a 1:8 model with further recruitment.
