Band 5

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is proud to be one of the largest and most progressive Trusts in the country, caring for over 1.2 million people across Essex. Our acute hospital sites—Broomfield in Chelmsford, Basildon, and Southend—work together to deliver outstanding care, close to home. We are a high-performing, well-led organisation with a strong focus on innovation, collaboration, and putting patients at the heart of everything we do.

As a Band 5 Nurse in our Neonatal Unit, you will be part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team providing specialist care to newborns who require intensive, high-dependency, or special care support. Whether you are newly qualified or looking to build on your experience, this is an exciting opportunity to grow your career in a nurturing and forward-thinking environment.

As part of our team, you will benefit from a structured preceptorship and ongoing professional development programme designed to help you thrive in your role. We offer access to specialist neonatal training and clear pathways for career progression, all within a caring, inclusive, and team-focused culture where your contributions are truly valued. You will enjoy the security of the NHS pension scheme, a generous annual leave entitlement, and a range of staff wellbeing initiatives.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 5 Neonatal Nurse, you will deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care to neonates and their families, ensuring each baby receives the highest standard of support during their critical early days. You will monitor and respond to changes in infant's conditions, administering treatments and medications as required, while providing parents with education, reassurance, and meaningful involvement in their baby’s care journey. Working collaboratively with consultants, midwives, and allied health professionals, you will contribute to a cohesive and effective multidisciplinary team. Maintaining accurate clinical documentation and adhering to professional standards will be central to your role, alongside actively engaging in continuous professional development and neonatal-specific training to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
