Job overview

As a key member of the  Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust, you will be joining an exceptional team working together to help our patients to stay healthy, when they need it most.

The aim of the NIHR fellowship is to prepare the Fellow for Consultant practice as a General Ophthalmologist with a special interest in oculoplastic surgery. Training the Fellow to be proficient in all oculoplastic procedures that are commonly performed by a sub-specialist (eyelid tumour management and reconstruction, eyelid malposition procedures, ptosis, lacrimal drainage surgery, blepharoplasty)

Your NIHR  Fellowship offers you complete surgical training in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbit including orbital decompression surgery.

Our Oculoplastic clinics run alongside a designated Consultant so that support and supervision is available with the department currently has 2 Oculoplastic Consultants so there is a wide exposure to clinical and surgical techniques.

The NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship (ACF) posts are allocated annually to Integrated Academic Training (IAT) partnerships providing a 12 month Fixed Term clinical and academic training environment for a doctor in the early stages of specialty training.

Main duties of the job

The post‑holder will supervise operating theatre sessions and deliver six outpatient clinics each week, including primary care, along with one dedicated teaching session. They will act as a point of contact for junior medical staff requiring Oculoplastic support and will undertake general ophthalmic outpatient duties as required.

The role includes coordinating and delivering the acute Oculoplastic service under the guidance of the Consultant Ophthalmologist. The post‑holder will also be responsible for managing administrative tasks and patient-related correspondence, as well as contributing to clinical governance activities within the department.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent. MRCS or equivalent
  • Full registration with GMC
Desirable criteria
  • FRCS (Plas) or equivalent

knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Previous experience at SpR (ie ST1-ST8) or equivalent level
  • NHS Experience
Desirable criteria
  • Extensive experience in ophthalmology

Audit and Governance

Essential criteria
  • Interest in, and knowledge of, medical audit and understands the principles of evidence based audit.
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of audit participation Standards High ethical/professional standards
