Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, enthusiastic and motivated Band 7 Nurse to join our established nursing leadership team within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Medical Same Day Emergency Care (MSDEC).
We are seeking a proactive and supportive nurse leader with proven clinical leadership and decision‑making skills, who thrives in a fast‑paced acute environment and is passionate about delivering high‑quality, safe and effective care. You will play a pivotal role in providing visible clinical leadership from the point of patient arrival through their entire journey within AMU and MSDEC.
This role requires expert knowledge of acute medicine, patient flow, capacity management and workforce leadership. You will work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure the effective management of the medical take, supporting both inpatient and same‑day emergency care pathways.

Main duties of the job
- Provide strong, visible clinical and professional leadership within AMU and MSDEC, supporting staff in the delivery of high‑quality, safe and effective patient care.
- Be professionally accountable for the standards, quality and delivery of nursing care within your area of responsibility.
- Support, teach and develop nursing staff, promoting a positive learning culture and ensuring excellence in clinical practice.
- Demonstrate expert clinical knowledge in acute medicine, including patient flow, capacity and escalation management.
- Safely receive and manage medical referrals from the Emergency Department and oversee the effective coordination of the medical take team.
- Actively contribute to decision‑making processes that impact patient flow, operational pressures and service delivery across the unit.
- Ensure high standards of cleanliness, infection prevention and control within the clinical area.
- Act as the named budget holder and authorised signatory, ensuring responsible management of financial resources.
- Maintain responsibility for information governance within the ward/department, ensuring accuracy, completeness and timely submission of data.
- Work collaboratively with senior nurses, medical staff and the wider multidisciplinary team to support service improvement and operational effectiveness.

- Degree / Diploma in Nursing or Public Health
- Evidence of continuous professional and personal development

- Leadership Development Programme / Management Training
Experience

- Demonstrable experience of which must be within specialty at band 6
- Demonstrate an ability to manage high quality patient care provision
- Change management experience and evidence to support change management
Desirable criteria
- Experience of developing and writing operational policies and clinical protocols
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- In depth understanding of quality issues and clinical governance
- Knowledge and experience of clinical Governance.
