Job overview

*This is not a registered nurse position. This role is for a nursery nurse*

An exciting opportunity has become available on the Children's Burns Ward for a new nursery nurse within our small friendly team. We are looking for someone  enthusiastic, hard working, empathetic, who has good communication skills, and enjoys working with children and their families. They are not required to have any prior burns care experience as training will be provided on the job.

The purpose built Children’s Burns Ward opened in the summer of 2010 and is part of The St Andrew's Centre, which is home to the world renowned specialist burns and plastic surgery service. It can take children up to the age of 16 years primarily from the South East of England, but occasionally from anywhere in the country if there is a shortage of burns beds. We can accept all types of burn injury including scalds, flame, chemical and electrical burns, as well as skin loss conditions such as scalded skin syndrome or TENS.

On the Children’s Burns Ward, we know that being in hospital with an injury can be very stressful for both the child and their family. We also know that no one knows the child as well as the parents. That’s why we take a family-centred care approach, and work in partnership with children/ young people and their families in determining treatment plans.

Main duties of the job

Supporting the registered nurses and other members of the burns team to provide a high standard of care to our patients

Providing wound care and dressing changes on burns patients, both on the ward and occasionally on outreach to other hospitals and the burns bus.

Working with play specialists to provide a child-friendly environment for our patients including distraction during procedures

Undertake clinical observations within competence, escalating concerns appropriately in a timely manner

Demonstrate an understanding of safeguarding for adults and children, report and document as appropriate and in a timely manner

Assist the team to maintain a safe working environment for patients, visitors and staff. Including preparing and cleaning rooms and equipment, with particular reference to infection prevention

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust
