Lead Helideck Fire Fighter
Broomfield Hospital
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled and dedicated Lead Helideck Fire Fighter to join our specialist team, supporting the safe and efficient operation of our hospital helipad.
As the Lead Helideck Fire Fighter, you will play a vital role in ensuring a competent and fully compliant Aviation Rescue and Fire Fighting Service (RFFS) is always available to respond to all helicopter arrivals and departures. Working in line with Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) legislation for hospital helipads, you will contribute to the safe delivery of time‑critical patient transfers and emergency operations.

We are looking for an individual who is calm under pressure, safety‑focused and passionate about maintaining exceptional standards.
You will ideally have experience in aviation firefighting or an equivalent high‑risk setting, along with strong leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.

Main duties of the job
- Ensure staff cover for helideck operations is maintained and that of the departments training schedules.
- Coordinate and manage the Volunteer Helideck Fire Fighters
Coordinate, deliver and maintain the training and skills of helideck staff. - Maintain records of training and other activities associated with
helideck operations as required - To manage and lead Deputy Helideck Fire Fighters and Trust Volunteer Fire Fighters.
- Provide an immediate and efficient response to any helideck related
emergencies - Assist in providing an effective helideck operation and be available to
liaise with local authority fire services as required. - Working with and maintain the standards of cleanliness and operational requirements for helideck facilities.
- To provide a safe, effective and efficient helideck operation during
aircraft movements. - Maintain the Helideck Quality Control Systems.
- Maintain the Helideck Asset Management System.
- Assist with and with other responsible persons as necessary in
acceptance testing of new fire fighting equipment and media. - Coordinate the calibrating, checking and inventory recording of all fire fighting equipment & media within the Helideck.
- Support the Helicopter Operations Manager in responding to
unscheduled activities. - Operate fire fighting systems in accordance with training and of take
leadership within the helideck team.

Essential criteria

Knowledge and Experience

- Able to demonstrate a thorough knowledge of current fire fighting and related equipment.
- Experience of Quality Control Systems.
Desirable criteria
- Have attended practical fire fighting courses/ exercises.
- Experience in the management and maintenance of fire fighting equipment & medium
- Knowledge of radio procedure
Skills and Aptitudes
Essential criteria
- Able to manage own workload and adapt to changing priorities within the helideck setting.
- Work well in a team and to communicate and take instruction as required.
- High level of fitness
