Job overview
We’re offering an exciting opportunity for a skilled and motivated Anatomical Pathology Technologist to become a vital member of our team at Broomfield Mortuary.
Broomfield Mortuary is the designated centre for Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNe) incident response in the Essex region. We facilitate DVI training to Essex Police, and we are experienced in managing complex forensic investigations. We're working closely with partners to explore the introduction of CT autopsy services across Mid & South Essex.
Our Trust has recently joined a pioneering initiative with NHS Blood and Transplant to improve access to postmortem corneal donation—further demonstrating our commitment to innovation.
In this role, you’ll help supervise junior staff and be actively involved in all areas of mortuary work. This includes upholding Human Tissue Authority (HTA) standards, supporting good governance, and contributing to the high standards our service is known for. As part of the team, you’ll oversee day-to-day mortuary operations including body receipt and release, postmortem procedures, viewings, and general administration. You’ll also play a key role in ensuring mortuary hygiene and health & safety compliance and support the teaching of junior mortuary staff and other staff throughout the hospital.
If you’re ready for the next step in your career and meet the requirements, we’d love to hear from you—apply now!
Main duties of the job
As an Anatomical Pathology Technologist, you will play a key role in the day-to-day operation and planning of mortuary services across the South West Essex area. Working closely with a dedicated mortuary team, you will ensure the delivery of a high-quality, dignified, and efficient service.
You will be responsible for supporting postmortem procedures alongside consultant and forensic pathologists, as well as coroner’s officers. This includes liaising effectively with police personnel, scenes of crime officers, and a range of external agencies to facilitate timely and accurate investigations.
In addition, you will provide essential support to medical and nursing staff, hospital colleagues, and funeral directors, acting as a key point of contact across multiple departments. A vital aspect of the role includes working with the bereavement team to offer compassionate support to grieving families and friends, ensuring they receive clear, sensitive communication and appropriate guidance.
You will also contribute to the training and development of trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologists, fostering a supportive and educational environment.
Throughout all aspects of your work, you will help uphold the highest standards of professional practice and regulatory compliance, ensuring the mortuary service operates with integrity, respect, and efficiency at all times.
