Lead Pharmacy Technician - Acute Medicine

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a highly skilled pharmacy technician to contribute to the care of patients admitted to our acute medical and frailty units.

You will be joining a friendly and well respected team working across the emergency floor at Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford (part of Mid and South Essex Hospitals NHS Trust).

 

 

Main duties of the job

To lead and develop pharmacy services to patients on the acute medical unit, in conjunction with the Operational Lead Technician, Clinical Lead Pharmacists and Head of Department. 

Review patients own medication, discuss, and resolve queries with the patient or carer. 

To liaise with doctors and nurses regarding discrepancies with patients medication to improve patient safety.

Actively promote the reporting of, and shared learning from, medication incidents within pharmacy and clinical areas. Deliver technical-based medication safety communications effectively.      

Final accuracy checks clinically screened prescriptions and orders prepared by other pharmacy staff before release to the patient. 

Provide counselling on use of medicines to patients and carers. 

Provide information and guidance on the use of medicines to ward and medical staff.

Identify the learning needs of members of the pharmacy team, plan and implement appropriate training strategies.  

Identify the learning needs of members of the pharmacy team, plan and implement appropriate training strategies including the training of other members of staff e.g., pre-registration pharmacy students as necessary.
