Are you interested in a varied and rewarding career in a speciality area? We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic therapist to join our established team within Burns, Plastics and Hand Therapy.

We currently have a vacancy for a Band 7 Physiotherapist (0.64 WTE) to lead the Breast Reconstructive therapy service, for maternity leave cover.

The successful candidate will lead the plastic surgery Physiotherapy team, specifically the breast reconstruction service. The post holder will have opportunity to experience all aspects of the speciality including inpatient ward work in the speciality of plastic surgery, ENT and head and neck cancer as well as managing both adult and children with burn injuries.

Ideal candidates will have clinical experience of plastic surgery or general surgical work and leadership experience in working in a team 

St Andrews is a busy and dynamic trauma unit where there are excellent opportunities to work within a multi-disciplinary team.  We have structured supervision and appraisal systems, monthly audit and training days, incorporating regular Journal Clubs. 

Main duties of the job

To provide the highest standards of Physiotherapy to the Burns and Plastic Surgery Service; this includes inpatients and outpatients, adults and children within the St Andrews Centre for Burns and Plastic Surgery. 

·            Works as an advanced autonomous practitioner.  Assesses, sets goals, provides treatment and progresses own patient caseload and that of other therapists which contains patients with complex and specialist needs.

·            Supervises, teaches and evaluates students and other staff working in own specialist area as required.

·            Clinical expert in breast reconstruction and leads in delivery of breast reconstruction physiotherapy.

·            Lead in delivery of On Call Physiotherapy and staff training for on call.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.    Demonstrates the ability to select the most appropriate form of assessment and care, reviewing techniques from a variety of sources and to work across the professional boundaries as appropriate.

2.    Provides clinical leadership within the field of Burns and plastics, in particular respiratory, on call and breast reconstruction physiotherapy.

3.    Based on extensive knowledge, experience and reflective practice, has the clinical reasoning skills to form rapid and accurate decisions in regard to patient management.

4.    Leads case management of complex plastic surgery patients.

5.    Implements accurate and timely therapy treatment for complex cases in specialist field, leading other staff and delegating caseload appropriately.

6.    Empowers the patient in their decision making to form shared goals in more challenging situations.

7.    Performs risk assessments and undertakes skilled therapeutic handling which requires strength and stamina.

8.    Initiates changes in own and others’ practice, developing skills and schemes through attending short, specialist courses and self-directed CPD.

9.    Facilitates opportunities for learning and contributes to the development of others by teaching, coaching and supervision.

10. Demonstrates CPD though participation in internal and external development opportunities, recording learning outcomes in CPD portfolio.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience in NHS setting (inpatients and outpatients)
  • Experience at band 6 Physiotherapy level or above
  • Respiratory/On Call experience

  • Experience of Plastic Surgery Physiotherapy
