Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Job overview
We are looking to appoint a Consultant Plastic Surgeon WSI Burns, Skin & Perineal Reconstruction at our Broomfield hospital site on a permanent full time basis.
The successful applicant will provide a specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery, Burns and Skin Cancer Surgery at the St Andrew’s Centre, Broomfield Hospital and its satellite sites. The successful applicant will also conduct and lead clinically relevant research to improve patient outcomes that will utilize and foster collaboration between local and national university facilities, and the clinical forum at St. Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties: Plastic Surgery Outpatient clinics, General Anesthetic Operating lists, Burns Outpatient Clinic, and Burns General Anesthetic Operating lists.
Clinical Governance & Audit: To undertake audit of clinical practice within the department to ensure that current standards are evidence-based practice are applied.
Organizational Duties: To undertake managerial and budgetary responsibilities; to work within the Trust's clinical risk management policies; to promote a friendly working environment; and teaching primary care colleagues and Junior medical staff through mixture of case-based review and formal teaching activity.
Continuing Professional Development: Colleagues are encouraged and required to develop their clinical skills, which will be recognized in the Trust's appraisal process.
Teaching and Training activities: There is an expectation that this role should involve o-going teaching and training of primary care colleagues in order to disseminate specialist skills and provide a forum for the discussion of case studies ad set clinical guidance. All consultants ate expected to take advantage of study leave to maintain and develop their clinical skills to comply with CME requirements.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful applicant will provide a specialist clinical service in General Plastic Surgery, Burns and Skin Cancer Surgery at the St Andrew’s Centre, Broomfield Hospital and its satellite sites. The successful applicant will also conduct and lead clinically relevant research to improve patient outcomes that will utilize and foster collaboration between local and national university facilities, and the clinical forum at St. Andrew’s Centre for Plastic Surgery and Burns.
- Providing emergency and ongoing expertise for patients and services regarding patients referred to him/her.
- The total clinical care of the patients referred to him/her, including all administrative duties associated with patient care, proper record keeping, and good communications maintained with patients and their general practitioners.
- Positive collaboration with colleagues to provide the effective clinical leadership for all the staff in the Burns and Plastic Surgery Service.
- Multidisciplinary teamwork is envisaged as a key component of this. He/she will participate in out of hours consultant cover and in the cover arrangements during colleagues’ annual/study leave.
- Undertaking regular ward rounds.
- Participate in clinical audit and in continuing professional education.
- Supervision, teaching, training and professional development of the junior medical staff working in the service. Consultants are fully involved in developing a high standard of teaching of junior medical staff, nurses, and medical students and in designing and contributing to the process for establishment and approval of training posts for junior medical staff.
- Maintaining standards of care for his/her service to the Medical Director, the Chief Executive and Chairman and the Board of the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust.
- It is also expected that the successful applicant will undertake to update their knowledge and skills and to demonstrate Continuing Professional Development at the Annual Appraisal.
The successful applicant is expected to be involved in the development of the Burns and Plastic Surgery Service at the St. Andrews Centre, Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust and will participate in the implementation of service improvements and ongoing monitoring of the Service and performance. They will have access to a wealth of clinical material for research and will be encouraged to develop links with academic departments in the

Essential criteria
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register
- Evidence of completion of a specialist training surgical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge and evidence relating to participation in Skin MDT
Experience
Essential criteria
- Completion of Burns Fellowship
- Evidence of completion of a specialist training surgical qualification
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of ability to carry out Burns Reconstruction independently and as part of a larger team
