Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

 

Job overview

This is a full time Consultant Medical Retina and Uveitis position. (10 PA sessions per week) Initially for a fixed term of 12 months but the post will be advertised substantively in the coming months. 

You will be responsible for patients from Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust which consists of Multiple sites.  Your base will be Broomfield Hospital and you will run clinics and theatre lists serving patients from all areas.  You will be expected to run both face-to-face and virtual clinics. Virtual clinics may be run at any of the Mid Essex sites.

You will supervise juniors and fellows in clinic (face to face and virtual) and theatre. You will have the opportunity to develop the service and take part in research, liaising with Anglia Ruskin University. Teaching takes place every Thursday afternoon.

The post holder will work with the friendly and enthusiastic team to deliver general and sub specialty MR and uveitis services for Mid and South Essex patients. 

You will be expected to set up and develop uveitis clinics and collaborate with Local other Medical specialities.

On Call commitment:

There is a 1:8 Category B (low frequency) 2% Consultant on call commitment associated with this post.

Main duties of the job

The Consultant will, in conjunction with colleagues:

  • Provide theatre cover as below
  • Provide an Ophthalmic service in accordance with the agreed timetable and subsequent job plan.
  • Provide 1 in 8 on call cover
  • Supervise trainee staff within the Trust.

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Successful completion of FRCO phth or equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration in either AIM or GIM with the GMC.
  • Holder of Certificate of completion of Training (CTT), or evidence of within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by date of interview.
  • Eligible for specialist registration within six months of interview
Desirable criteria
  • Higher academic qualification e.g. MD, PhD or equivalent.
  • Fellowship or advanced training in Uveitis or a related sub speciality

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in general ophthalmology and sub-specialty experience in Medical retina and Uveitis
  • Able to take responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in managing uveitis in complex patients such as those with auto immune disorders

Training and Teaching

Essential criteria
  • Experience of teaching medical students
  • Experience of supervising trainees
  • Knowledge of teaching to a multidisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Formal teaching qualification
