Job overview
We are looking for a vibrant, confident person to join our Cancer Hub at Colchester General Hospital to help deliver a high quality service
This role is a Fixed Term/Secondment until 31st December 2025
We need key staff, with excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
You must have basic keyboard skills and have a clear and confident telephone manner. Ideally, you will have previous experience in a similar environment within an NHS setting.

Main duties of the job
You will need to have excellent organisational skills as this is a fast paced environment to work in.
You will need to have the ability to work on your own initiative and you must be able to remain calm in difficult situations.
Patients who are invited to attend these appointments may be anxious about a cancer diagnosis and may be tearful, distressed, upset and/or angry and you need to be able to listen and deal with their enquiry politely and efficiently.
You will be required to work within timed pathways and comply with national and local waiting time targets.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Main duties will include processing of cancer referrals sent into the Trust by GP's & booking urgent new appointments in accordance with the timeframes set out within the National Cancer Waiting Times Guidance.
You will be responsible for contacting patients by telephone to invite them to urgent appointments within the next 14 days.

Experience
Essential criteria
- Dealing directly with patients and their families in an administrative capacity
- Use of Portal to register patients & book appointments
- Dealing with telephone queries from GPs and other external agencies
Desirable criteria
- Escalation of capacity issues to those at Service Management level
- Use of Somerset Cancer Register
Qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE in English and Maths - least C grade
Desirable criteria
- Relevant vocational qualifications (e.g. NVQ in administration/ECDL or similar)
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Previous knowledge of hospital work and systems
- Knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues
- Knowledge of the pressures the NHS as a whole is currently facing, in particular Cancer Services
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of National Cancer Waiting Times Guidance V.9.0
