Job overview

We are looking for an innovative, self-motivated Dietitian to take up a post working with children and adolescents with Diabetes.  You will have excellent clinical skills and a broad knowledge of Diabetes with previous experience of working with these age groups.

Alongside the lead Dietitian for Paediatric Diabetes you will be providing specialist input as an integral part of the Multidisciplinary Team at the Diabetes Centre. You will contribute to the dietetic service for paediatric diabetes, including developing structured education in conjunction with the paediatric diabetes specialist nurses.

You will be able to work autonomously, providing highly specialised clinical assessments and treatment to a complex caseload of children and young people with Diabetes in a variety of settings.

You will be part of a team consisting of 26 Dietitians and 8 Dietetic Technicians/Assistants as well as Administrative and Secretarial staff working across both the acute and community sectors.

We are a recognised department for student training in partnership with the University of Hertfordshire and high priority is given to the continuing professional development of our staff.

Main duties of the job

  •  
  • To contribute to the development of an effective and innovative dietetic service to children and young people with diabetes using a high level of knowledge, skill and experience.
  • To be responsible for the provision of highly specialised dietetic service to paediatric patients with Type 1 diabetes requiring nutritional intervention
  • To be responsible for the delivery of  a high quality, evidence-based dietetic service to a complex case load of children and young people with diabetes in a variety of settings.
  • To provide specialist input to the Diabetes Multi-disciplinary Team by contributing to the strategic development of the Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes service, achievement of the Best Practice Tariff criteria and training of other health professionals.
  • To adjust insulin doses according to dietary intake and other relevant factors, as described in the Ipswich Hospital ‘Protocol for adjustment of insulin in children and young people 0-18 years’ .

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree/Postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics
  • Current HCPC registration in Dietetics
  • Member of British Dietetic Association
  • Membership of the BDA paediatric group and or paediatric DMEG
  • Recognised University course with Post registration training in diabetes or equivalent experience in diabetes
Desirable criteria
  • Membership of relevant specialist interest groups
  • Leadership qualifications e.g. LEO, supervisory skills, management training
  • Post registration training in paediatric dietetics (modular courses in paediatrics)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Proven post registration experience in diabetes and paediatrics.
  • Working with children with diabetes
  • Current or recent experience working within a Diabetes and/or Paediatric MDT
  • Experience of multi-agency and collaborative working
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of service development and/or practice innovation
  • Experience of training/teaching healthcare professionals and patients
  • Car driver
  • Experience of delivery of structured education in diabetes and/or paediatrics
