Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dietitian with a genuine interest in paediatrics at Colchester Hospital. For the right candidate a band 5 to 6 progression opportunity could be offered. Working alongside a friendly and experienced team of specialist paediatric dietitians, you will work as part of a band 6 rotational team consisting of three dietitians. You will be supported by colleagues covering a range of specialist areas.
You will cover the general paediatric caseload including inpatients, the children’s assessment unit and general outpatients. Each post will have a specialist focus as part of rotational learning and one rotation will provide 3.5 days per week working as part of the diabetes MDT. Other specialist areas that will be offered as part of the rotation may include HEF, LD, allergy, gastroenterology, CF, Oncology, and baby clinic. 
The role will include service development, participation in clinical audit and quality improvement projects.
You will have proven experience in clinical dietetics, ideally with experience of paediatric dietetics.  
The Paediatric Dietitians are an integral part of the MDT and are involved with audit, research projects, teaching and training all health professionals. The Trust has approximately 200 children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes; 1 children’s ward and a level 2 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 

Main duties of the job

To work as part of a 3 way band 6 paediatric rotation covering a variety of clinical areas including but not limited to inpatients, outpatient clinics, oncology, diabetes and home enteral feeding. The following statements relate to universal and rotation specific duties.

To provide out-patient paediatric dietetic services to patients within North East Essex

To provide cover to the in-patient dietetic service on the Children’s ward within Colchester Hospital with support from a specialist paediatric Dietitian where required.  

To provide training to ward staff where required and audit how effective the nutritional audit tool is on a monthly basis.

To provide weekly cover for the paediatric oncology patient as part of the MDT in outpatients and attend a month multidisciplinary team meeting jointly with the tertiary centre also involved in the treatment plan for the patient,

To provide a Dietetic Service to Paediatric Home Enteral Feeding patients as required.

To work as part of the paediatric diabetes MDT under the supervision of the specialist paediatric diabetes dietitian

To be the dietetic lead at case conferences and within the multi-disciplinary team for patients under your care. 

To act as a source of expertise on paediatric nutrition and dietetics within East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

To undertake short term project work to support resource development within the team, awareness raising of the dietetic team and nutrition messages as required.

  • Dietetics e.g. paediatric short courses or modules
