Job overview
The Gastroenterology Team are looking to appoint a colleague who is committed to delivering high-quality services across the breadth of gastroenterology and hepatology.
The new post-holder will join a team of five existing consultants. The department has a reputation for being friendly and supportive with particularly good working relationships. There is capacity for a wide variety of sub-specialty interests to be accommodated and developed.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide a specialist clinical gastroenterology service, including inpatient, endoscopy and outpatient gastroenterology work. A broad knowledge of gastroenterology and general medicine is essential as is expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
We would be keen to develop any subspecialty interest the candidate might have that is complementary to those of the existing consultants. In particular, ERCP, bowel screening and hepatology would be readily accommodated.

Main duties of the job
The post-holder will:
- Work with colleagues to provide a consultant-led service with the highest standard of care
- Work with the multi-professional team to develop care pathways and clinical guidelines
- Develop and maintain good working practices within wards, outpatients and A&E
- Collaborate and promote close working links with colleagues in tertiary centres, community services and primary care
- Offer support and leadership to junior medical colleagues, nursing colleagues and other members of the multi-disciplinary team

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT) provides hospital and community health care . We serve a wide geographical area with a population approaching 800,000 residents. We deliver care services from two main hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, six community hospitals, high street clinics and in patients’ own homes. We have nearly 10,000 staff, with an annual budget of over £650 million. We are the largest NHS organisation in the East Anglia.
We are building for better care with an exciting capital development programme across our sites – totalling £100million over the next five years.
We are building a new elective orthopaedic centre for ESNEFT at Colchester Hospital. It will be one of the biggest centres in the country and will ensure we can retain complex and low volume cases locally for the people we serve.
We are also now building a £7million specialist interventional radiology and cardiac angiography unit at Colchester.
At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post will consist of 10 Programmed Activities which includes 2 SPAs. Any additional PAs that may be required will be discussed, agreed and job planned with the successful appointee.
This weekly timetable below is indicative and may be subject to change depending on the clinical preference and on service need. A detailed programme, with personal objectives and any support identified will be agreed with the lead clinician on appointment.
The timetable below is consistent with a job plan with 8.0 PA of direct clinical care and 2.0 PA supporting professional activities. Morning and afternoon sessions are of 4 hours duration.

Essential criteria
- On GMC Specialist Register in GIM and Gastroenterology (or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview)
- MB,BS or equivalent; MRCP
- Ability to provide expert clinical opinions across a wide range of problems within the specialties of GIM and Gastroenterology
- Extensive experience working in National Health Service in the UK
- Ability to perform all forms of GI endoscopy to a high standard, including haemostasis and other therapeutic procedures.
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, nurses and other agencies.
- Full Driving Licence and regular access to a car
- Educational/Clinical Supervisor (the necessary training will be provided for applicants that have not undertaken these roles previously)
Desirable criteria
- MD or PhD
- Training in a sub-specialty complementary to that of the existing consultants.
- Management training and experience
- Live within a 10-mile radius of the relevant hospital site
