Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is professional, reliable, innovative and flexible to join our friendly and hardworking team at Colchester Haematology.
You will manage the staff of the Haematology department and may be required to deputise for the local Biochemistry Manager regarding day to day staffing matters including Specimen Reception. You will work closely with the Transfusion Laboratory Manager and Haematology & Blood Transfusion Compliance Manager.
You will lead a friendly, busy department who have a close working relationship with our clinical consultant staff. We are MHRA compliant and UKAS accredited therefore recent experience of UKAS and or MHRA inspections are required to ensure the department maintains accreditation and meets regulatory compliance.
We are committed to attracting, developing and retaining the best pathology staff. We encourage our staff to undertake internal and external courses to aid their development. You will lead the development of staff but also be supported in your own professional development.
You will need to have evidence of staff management and leadership experience, excellent communication skills as well as HCPC registered and have higher qualifications commensurate to the role. You will need current experience within Haematology and good knowledge of the medical laboratory accreditation standards.
This post is full time, 37.5 hours per week, however part time hours with a minimum of 30 per week may be considered

- Responsible as lead Healthcare scientist for Haematology
- Manages and coordinates the day to day activities of the team
- Leads on service improvement
- Processes highly specialist investigations and responsible for standard and quality of results of the service.
- Provides expert advice, opinions training to own and other professions in specialist area of activity.
- Provides specialist training, in own or other disciplines; may lead, manage team for Haematology.
- To work flexibly in reflection of service needs which may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service
- The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
- Maintain and promote professional image of the pathology department.

Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Highly specialist knowledge and experience in a specialised analytical or clinical area relevant to post
- Extensive practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory
- Experience of Pathology IT systems
- Practical experience of Quality Management Systems
- Experience of managing people and leadership
- Experience of performing and evaluating Risk Assessments
- To have undertaken Research, Development and audit activities.
- Experience of compliance to laboratory accreditation standards
- Previous / current management experience
Desirable criteria
- Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
- Relevant scientific publications
- Experience of successful MHRA inspection
- Experience of successful inspection to ISO:15189
- European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
Education
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist or Clinical scientist
- Science Degree or equivalent
- Appropriate Post Graduate Master’s degree or equivalent
- Evidence of CPD
Desirable criteria
- Holding or working towards a qualification that supports management responsibilities
