Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Specialist Occupational Therapist to join the Neuro-Rehab team based at Colchester Hospital. 

We are an established and respected multi-disciplinary outpatient and community team providing long-term management for people with a variety of neurological conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Motor Neurone Disease and traumatic brain injury. The team consists of Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, a Specialist Nurse, and Rehabilitation Assistants. We work closely with many other agencies including the voluntary sector to provide person centred care.

You will be an excellent communicator with knowledge and experience of working with people with neurological conditions/ community working.

The post is based in the Neurological Rehabilitation Department at Colchester General Hospital. Due to the community working and community clinics a car owner and driver is essential.

This is a fixed term role until 12th June 2026

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for providing specialist assessment, treatment, and advice to patients with highly complex conditions in primary and secondary care settings.

To carry out risk assessments and provide specialist advice to other members of the multi-disciplinary team as well as members of all other teams on specialist aspects of manual handling in relation to individual patient care and treatment of neurology patients.

To ensure appropriate integrated pathways of care and communication via liaison and referral to other agencies both internal and external to the Trust as required.

To be competent to work as an autonomous practitioner managing own workload in neurology, including patients with highly specialist needs.

To participate in delivering specialist training and supervision of junior staff, assistants, and students.

To deputise for Clinical Leads in their absence.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Post registration experience working at Band 5 level in core rotations
  • Competencies relevant to specialism
  • Experience of managing the work of others
  • Experience of working within a multidisciplinary / interdisciplinary team
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working as a Band 6
  • Experience of providing formal presentations to multi professional groups
  • Experience of research/audit methodology
  • Experience of service development

Qualifications & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Registered OT with HCPC
  • Professional knowledge and Skills acquired through a combination of formal training, short courses and experience to degree level or equivalent
  • Relevant post qualification training through short courses and/or further study and experience for example splinting and injections, working towards post graduate level of study
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
  • Good theoretical and practical knowledge of a broad range of assessments including specialist relevant to the specialist care group and the relative benefits of each
  • Good knowledge of a range of specialist therapeutic interventions relevant to the care group including the relative benefits of each and the comparative outcomes
  • Knowledge of the current evidence-based practice
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised registered qualification and further courses and experience relevant to role
  • Registered member of RCOT
  • Specialist neuro-rehabilitation knowledge and experience of a wide range of approaches to the management of complex neurological and chronic conditions, demonstrated by clinical reasoning

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Supervise the work of students, assistants and volunteers
  • To use Word, Powerpoint, email, excel and access (or similar spreadsheet or database packages)
  • Car owner/driver/access to a motor vehicle (role will involve travel to other sites that cannot be easily accessed by public transport means)
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to manage a team
