Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Job overview

The Health Care assistant will function as part of the multi-disciplinary team within the ward 
or department to provide a seamless service & high-quality care to patients under the direct 
supervision of a Registered Nurse. The HCA is expected to undertake care to meet the 
needs of the patients under the supervision of a qualified nurse, working within the Trust’s 
policies and procedures and the philosophy of the ward. Working collaboratively as part of 
the ward team.
It is expected that the Health Care Assistant will continue to develop their own capabilities 
and knowledge of nursing tasks in line with the Trust’s career pathway

Main duties of the job

Clinical Responsibilities

·     At all times maintain the dignity and respect of patients

·     maintain excellent communication with patients, relatives, and members of the MDT regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a variety of communications skills in accordance with the client group

·   Implement patient care plans as instructed by a Registered Nurse

·   Assist in the admission process by accurately recording patient’s demographic details

·   To assist patients with personal and oral hygiene as instructed

·    To assist patients with eating and drinking

·   Monitoring and accurate recording of dietary and fluid intake appropriately reporting any abnormalities to the nurse in charge

·   Enable patients to access appropriate toilet facilities, collecting and disposing of body

·    Testing blood sugars, urine and stool specimens & accurately record results

·     Obtain specimens & process specimens to the laboratory

·     Able to prepare equipment for aseptic procedures as instructed

·   Complete competencies and assist in Procedure clinics

·    Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, support patients undergoing clinical procedures ensuring their dignity, respect, comfort, and safety

·     Undertake equipment safety checks

Communication

Maintain excellent communication with patients, relatives and members of the MDT regarding all aspects of care demonstrating a variety of communication skills in accordance with the client group.

To answer telephone calls in a professional manner as per Trust guidance, taking full information and caller details to ensure accurate escalation to the appropriate person.
