Job overview

We would like to invite candidates to apply for a Specialty Doctor to join the Breast Unit at Princess Alexandra Hospital. This opportunity has arisen on a fixed-term basis for a 6 month period. The focus of the role will be to ensure that national and local targets are met managing the rising cancer 2 week wait referrals and treatment to target times. You will join an existing team of two Oncoplastic Surgeons, an Associate Specialist, three Trust Doctors, and four Breast Radiologists. The post holder should demonstrate ability to work flexibly and within a team.

Please note that, the focus of the role is running outpatient clinics, ward referrals and perioperative care. At present, we are not able to offer time in theatres except on an ad-hoc basis when some team members are absent.

The Breast Unit houses both the symptomatic service and the Epping Breast Screening Service.

Main duties of the job

The post suits a Speciality Doctor in Breast Surgery with experience to run breast clinics (rapid diagnosis one stop, results and follow up). The focus will be to work collaboratively with the existing team and to manage the rising cancer 2 week wait referrals and treatment to target times. This post has no General Surgery commitments. 

The post holder is expected to work closely with the Breast Multidisciplinary team providing and further developing care of breast patients and further develop breast services. The post holder will be expected to attend and participate in the Breast MDT and clinical and management meetings.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCS or equivalent qualification
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council at time of application
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Current experience in managing patients with breast complaints
  • Experience in the multi-disciplinary management of breast patients
  • Current experience of running one-stop and follow-up breast clinics independently
  • Competence in pre-operative and post-operative management of breast surgical patients
  • Broad experience in breast surgery

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues
  • Ability to recognise own limitations
