Job overview
An exciting one year fixed-term opportunity has arisen within the Trust’s Capital Team for an Assistant Capital Project Accountant. In this role, you will support the department’s Finance Business Partners by providing financial advice and information, working closely with Estates, Digital, and Clinical Budget Holders to deliver the Trust’s capital programme efficiently. This is a great opportunity to broaden your finance experience, develop new skills, and make a real impact within a supportive and professional team.
The successful candidate is expected to have strong IT skills, with proficiency in Excel, a good understanding of capital accounting principles, and experience working in a finance environment. While NHS finance experience is not essential, a working knowledge of the NHS finance regime and an awareness of current NHS issues would be advantageous.

Main duties of the job
The Assistant Capital Project Accountant will support the Finance Business Partner – Capital Projects in managing and reporting on the Trust’s capital programme. This includes monitoring financial performance, preparing journals, reconciliations, and forecasts, and providing advice and guidance to budget holders. The role involves supporting capital planning and bids, contributing to year-end processes and annual accounts, and assisting with administrative and ad hoc tasks to ensure the effective delivery of the Trust’s capital programme.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Assist the Finance Business Partner - Capital Projects with the preparation of monthly capital project reports, ensuring accuracy, reconciliations, and variance analysis.
· Prepare and input journals, commitments, and pre-payments, ensuring proper coding, authorisation, and supporting documentation.
· Meet with budget holders to review financial performance, provide guidance, and support financial control.
· Support the setup and management of capital cost centres to track expenditure accurately.
· Undertake costings to support the development of new capital bids and business cases.
· Assist with the annual capital planning process, including programme prioritisation and bid preparation.
· Raise and process invoices for inter-organisational capital cross-charges with appropriate documentation.
· Advise budget holders on financial systems, statement interpretation, and compliance with procedures and policies.
· Contribute to year-end processes and the production of the Trust Annual Accounts, including working papers and audit support.
· Provide administrative and ad hoc support to the Capital and Commercial Teams to ensure effective delivery of the Trust’s capital programme.

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Level 6 GCSE or equivalent in Maths and Level 4 GCSE or equivalent in English
Desirable criteria
- Engaged in study for AAT level 4 or CCAB or equivalent professional body, or equivalent knowledge gained through extensive experience in a similar role
Additional Qualities
Essential criteria
- Ability to travel across sites and across Trust boundaries to attend meetings, etc
Desirable criteria
- Current UK driving licence
