Job overview

This is a 10 PA post for a Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology. An opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic individual to further develop and maintain our high-quality local service.

The diabetes and endocrine service allows exposure to subspecialist interests whilst also providing exposure to general medicine. The general medicine cover is split between consultant colleagues and involves ward rounds of 28 in-patients on our dedicated ward. Education and support of junior medical colleagues is important. The contribution to the acute medical take is currently on a 1:14 overnight telephone support commitment (off-site) and also a 1:14 weekend and bank holiday commitment (on-site during day) which involves post take ward rounds of acute medicine patients during the day and overnight telephone support. The on call supplement allocation is 1 PA.

Clinical advice support for other members of the multidisciplinary team is occasionally sought and is an important component (eg diabetes specialist nurses, podiatrists and midwives). Specialist diabetes and endocrine ward consultations may on occasion be necessary.

There will be requirement to undertake some outpatient clinics each week on the Princess Alexandra Hospital main site. Occasionally, the appointee may be required to work in outpatient clinics located either at St Margaret’s Hospital, Epping or Herts & Essex Hospital, Bishops Stortford. Time off in lieu will be considered (such as for weekend working).

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate would provide Consultant care, advice and treatment to all patients with Diabetes and Endocrine problems within a modern, effective and integrated service.

The new consultant will undertake outpatient workload, provide inpatient care on our dedicated ward and will continue to review and develop the service to meet the requirements of the local population.

The department holds a monthly Clinical Governance meeting and all staff are encouraged to attend. Audits both local and national are supported by our audit department. The trust is dedicated to quality improvement activity and this is supported by our award-winning Quality First department. For candidates with a particular interest in this area a dedicated 1PA can be offered for quality improvement work.

The trust maintains close links with our tertiary referral centres. Our patients are well supported by partners including Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, University College London Hospital, King’s College Hospital, Queens’s Hospital, Romford and Queen’s Square Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. Attendance at tertiary referral centre multidisciplinary meetings is encouraged for patient discussion and CPD (one day per month may be arranged for this purpose).
