Job overview

·         To provide specialist dietetic input to the diabetes service and also to enable the team to meet the Diabetes Best Practice Tariff.

·         Provide highly specialist extended scope diabetes education and advice to children and their parents or carers

·         To educate and train other health care workers and professionals to give evidence based nutritional and diabetes education advice.

·         To provide a comprehensive dietetic service to children and young people with diabetes up to the age of 19 years

 

Main duties of the job

·         To be an integral member of the Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes multidisciplinary service team

·         Provided dietetic input at multidisciplinary diabetes clinics a variety of hospital and community settings

·         Educate and support children as in-patients with newly diagnosed and existing diabetes as required in line with Best Practice Tariff (BPT), National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA) and NICE guidance

·         To take responsibility for the education of Paediatric and Adolescent Diabetes patients and their carers in terms of dietary advice to fit into patients’ lifestyles including carbohydrate counting competency to ensure they meet nutritional competencies prior to pump training.

·         Participate in education for school staff supporting children with diabetes

·         Participate in education for other clinical staff with the PAH NHS Trust

·         Offer separate one to one appointments for dietary assessment to all children with diabetes in line with the BPT and NPDA standards

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent post-graduate qualification
  • Registered as a Dietitian with the Health and Care Professions Council
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of post registration training in the form of short courses and study days

  • To be a member of British Dietetic Association (BDA) special interest paediatric diabetes group
Desirable criteria
  • Post-registration experience working in paediatric dietetics in an acute setting
