Job overview

We inviting applicants to apply for the Specialty Doctor post in ENT at Ipswich Hospital. This post is until the 6th of October 2026. 

The post-holder will be responsible mainly for running outpatient clinics at Ipswich Hospital. Operating sessions, depending on ability, can be agreed with the Clinical Lead. The post holder is expected to partake in the middle grade on call rota. Day to day running of the otolaryngology beds and providing guidance to the junior doctors in their duties as and when necessary is a requirement.

Main duties of the job

The ENT Department across both hospital sites are responsible for providing a specialist ENT services for the population of North East Essex and East Suffolk, this equates to approximately 800,000 people.  They are also responsible for the training and supervision of junior medical staff.  They are expected to participate in management through the Directorate structure. 

Increasingly some aspects of service delivery may focus more on one site then the other if clinically appropriate.  In the first instance this may effect on-call provision.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

GENERAL

  •  The post holder may have to provide 2nd on-call cover as an ENT Speciality Doctor
  • To assist the junior doctors in completing electronic discharge summaries and electronic tertiary referrals.
  • To be available to offer specialist ENT advice to other medical and surgical teams within the hospital and, occasionally, at one of the other hospitals within the Trust.
  •  When on duty, to offer specialist general ENT advice to other firms and hospitals as required
  • An active part in educational programmes for junior medical staff, including formal teaching sessions and clinical audits relevant to the needs of the Unit
  • To teach and train staff in other medical disciplines, nursing and support staff as appropriate
  • Issuing of advice to GPs on suitability of patients for admission to hospital
  • To undertake outpatient clinics on behalf of the consultants, reviewing routine, urgent and cancer patients
  • To support the ENT department in their activities
  • Take part in the regular ENT team out of hours (on-call) duties including the Colchester site
  •  Demonstrate flexibility in working patterns to help the department provide a smooth running service
  •  Support the consultant in theatre and outpatient, and at times run theatre as first operator when necessary.

Person specification

Essential

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with a license to practice
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Possess up-to-date knowledge of principles and practices in ENT
  • Three years previous experience at ST1+ with at least one year in ENT in recognised posts for training
  • A confident person who has the ability to manage, motivate and teach the junior medical staff
  • Capacity to manage time and prioritise workload, balance urgent & important demands, follow instructions
Desirable criteria
  • MRCS/FRCS or equivalent
  • DLO or DOHNS equivalent
  • Experienced in medicine outside ENT
  • 10 years post registration
  • Clear plan for continued professional development
