Job overview
We are seeking confident, enthusiastic staff to support the busy Haematology section of the Blood sciences department at Ipswich Hospital. The service supports the patients within North Essex and East Suffolk receiving up to 2,500 samples per day.
The role will involve sample reception for Haematology and Coagulation. Checking that correct patient samples are received, samples are correct for testing, logging the samples and tests onto the laboratory computer system, loading the samples for processing and removing once tested. Full training will be provided.
You will need to have a patient focussed attitude with excellent attention to detail. Excellent computer skills are essential.
You will be required to work in a team environment, in a busy laboratory providing results to help in the treatment and diagnosis of our hospital and community patients.
This role is non patient facing but experience of working in a healthcare environment would be advantageous, as is previous laboratory experience.
Main duties of the job
- Provide sample reception, booking in and preparation for the Haematology Late shift
- Performs a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science activities under supervision e.g. loading and unloading of analysers, maintaining the work flow through the department to support BMS staff.
- Maintains clinical records in relation to activities carried out.
- The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.
- Under supervision, perform a range of manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations accurately and efficiently.
- Responsible for sample receipt, numbering and data entry on to the computer system. Use own judgement to identify, action and report mislabelled or mislaid specimens, unsuitable sample or process failure.
- Supports quality control processes.

Education
Essential criteria
- GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Appropriate NVQ level 3/diploma
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma
Desirable criteria
- Practical experience of working in a Biomedical Science laboratory
- Knowledge of Pathology IT systems
- Knowledge of Quality Management Systems
- Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS
- European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent
Skills and Aptitude
Essential criteria
- Good communication skills
- Willingness to undertake cross training to extend skill set to deliver role
- Demonstrable interpersonal skills - can work as part of a team.
