Job overview

East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust have an exciting opportunity to apply for the role of a Biomedical Scientist - Microbiology at Ipswich Hospital.

This is a wonderful opportunity for a HCPC registered biomedical scientist to be part of a motivated and dynamic team in providing an efficient and effective service to our patients. It would be desirable for you to have Microbiology experience.

Based at Ipswich Hospital our vision is to deliver innovative, high-performing pathology that is focused on our customers and delivers high quality and fully compliant services.

We want the best staff and are committed to attracting and retaining the best pathology staff and if you want to work with us to develop your own career and help us to achieve our vision then we would like to hear from you.  We are in the unique position of providing a dedicated Pathology Training Team with the aim of producing a highly skilled workforce through the provision of continued training and development for our staff.

Work flexibly in reflection of service needs. This may include an extended working day and it will include weekend working.

Our pathology department is part of the collaborative East Coast Pathology Network (see attached document)

About our Pathology Service

Main duties of the job

  • Perform manual, semi-automated and fully automated laboratory investigations within a defined service area accurately and efficiently. 
  • Undertake quality control procedures and the processing of quality control material as per established protocols.
  • Participate in the day to day management of stock control and usage.
  • Be aware of current advances and appraise new techniques.
  • Evaluate, interpret and validate test results and escalate where appropriate in line with established protocols. 
  • Clean and maintain equipment to achieve the optimum instrument performance and maintain a clean and safe working environment. 
  • Perform basic troubleshooting in line with established protocols and report any faults to a senior member of staff.
  • Participate in Research and Development, clinical trials and equipment testing.

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of Biomedical procedures gained through BSc or equivalentperforming risk assessments
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience working in Biomedical Science laboratory
  • Knowledge of Pathology IT Systems
  • Risk Assessments
  • NHS Experience
  • European Computer Driving Licence or eqivalent

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • HCPC Registered as Biomedical Scientist
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent
  • Evidence of Continual Professional Development
  • Additional appropriate specialist qualification if required.
