Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Stroke Rehabilitation Assistant to join the Acute Stroke Team service at Ipswich Hospital.
You should have an interest in Stroke care and want to support the specialist emergency response team for TIA, hyper-acute and acute stroke patients within the stroke unit.
You will be a key member of the stroke nursing team ensuring high quality stroke care is delivered. You will be part of a multi professional team who provide 24/7 hyper acute stroke care.
You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in caring for stroke patients and will complete stroke related competencies to ensure that patients receive high standards of care
You should have:
- A background in health care/ Health Care Assistant
- Excellent communication & team work skills
- The desire to develop your stroke clinical skills and knowledge
- Be committed to your professional development
Main duties of the job
- To contribute to the rehabilitation needs of identified stroke patients under the direction of the multidisciplinary team in the Stroke Unit.
- To follow individual patient treatment plans, identified in the Integrated Care Pathway, aiming to achieve rehabilitation goals and maximum levels of independence.
- To contribute to the needs of patients identified within the Rapid Assessment Unit under the direction of the Ward Sister/Stroke Specialist Nurse.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Willing to undertake trust wide competencies in stroke care
- Willing to regularly attend stroke training sessions
- General Standard education – GCSE or equivalent Maths & English
Desirable criteria
- NVQ level 2
- In-house competencies
Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven experience of working with people with physical disabilities in a rehabilitation or hospital environment as a Health Care Assistant.
- Ability to work within a team but also have the ability to plan and initiate own workload
- Completed or studying towards ‘Care Certificate’
Desirable criteria
- Worked with people who have had a stroke
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Basic understanding of Stroke
- Understands basic principles of rehabilitation and the ‘hands off’ approach
- Knowledge of roles within the MDT
Desirable criteria
- Knowledge of community stroke services
Skills
Essential criteria
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Good organisational skills
- Flexible approach to the diversities within stroke recovery from acute intensive to long term slow rehabilitation and follow up
- Able to initiate within the boundaries of the role
- Keen to develop skills and knowledge and participate in service developments
