Senior Chemotherapy Nurse

Band 7

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Band 7 Chemotherapy Nurse to join our haematology and infusion service. This is a senior clinical leadership role within a dynamic and supportive team, delivering high-quality, patient-centred care to individuals undergoing treatment for haematological cancers.

Our unit specialises in chemotherapy for haematological malignancies, as well as blood transfusions and other non-cancer infusions. The successful candidate will bring expert knowledge in systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), ensuring safe administration of treatment, adherence to national guidelines, and high standards of infection control.

You will provide clinical leadership, support, and mentorship to a predominantly junior nursing team, helping to build a safe and positive learning environment. The role also involves working with the wider multidisciplinary team to support service development, audits, and quality improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced chemotherapy nurse to help shape the future of a growing specialist service.

Main duties of the job

Key responsibilities include:

- Delivering and overseeing the safe administration of chemotherapy and other intravenous therapies

- Leading the unit’s clinical standards and ensuring best practice is maintained

- Supporting, supervising, and developing junior staff through education and mentorship

- Contributing to service audits, clinical governance, and quality improvement

- Working collaboratively with medical and allied health professionals to ensure seamless patient care

What we’re looking for:

- Registered Nurse with current NMC registration

- Accredited chemotherapy qualification and significant SACT experience

- Strong leadership skills and experience supervising or mentoring junior staff

- Passion for delivering high standards of care in a specialist cancer service

- Excellent communication, organisational, and clinical decision-making skills

Join us and play a key role in shaping the future of our haematology and infusion service while making a real difference to patient care.

Working for our organisation

Our ambition is to deliver excellent local and specialist services, to improve the health and well being of our patients, and provide a vibrant place for staff to develop, innovate and build careers.

We aim to make the most of our skills and experiences so we can become the best we can be. As one organisation we will recruit the finest and retain more specialist staff due to more employment opportunities across our Trust.
