Job overview
· Support clinical staff by addressing the non-clinical needs of the patients in achieving an excellent level of customer service, by ensuring that the patient environment is a welcoming, clean, comfortable, and safe.
· Supporting the Senior Sister, Charge Nurse and Ward Staff in maintaining the ward environment, liaise closely with the Facilities Service Manager and the Estates Help Desk, ensuring that all issues pertaining to the patients’ environment and needs are dealt with efficiently.
Main duties of the job
- 1. To work with the domestic staff allocated to your ward(s) to ensure that there is a high standard of cleanliness.
- 2. Spot clean and ensure spillages are dealt with swiftly and efficiently
- 3. Bring to the attention of nursing staff any shortfalls in cleanliness of patient equipment.
- 4. Undertake cleaning of spillage’s, including body fluids in line with Trust infection control policies and procedures
- 5. An awareness of all infection control issues
- 6. Arrange for specialist cleaning as and when required, i.e. carpet cleaning, deep cleaning.
- 7. Address that the patient has all toiletry requisites
- 8. Responsible for keeping the unit tidy by encouraging both staff and patients to be aware of the standards expected by PLACE.
- 9. Ensure that segregation and disposal of waste is disposed of according to the Trust’s Waste Management Policy
- 10. Take responsibility to ensure that mandatory training is up to date

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
In addition to the above duties you will also be expected to perform the below key activities in line with your job role;
1. Audit stock control of beverages, snacks, adequate supplies of fresh fruit and order when required
2. Maintain the ward(s) environment, both internal and external, to ensure that that it is safe and welcoming.
3. Report all maintenance faults to the Estates Helpdesk as soon as identified via the Facilities Support Desk. You will be responsible for following up persistent problems with the appropriate help/support desk.
4. Ensure that curtains, carpets and upholstery are kept clean and in a good state of repair. This will involve re-hanging curtains, arranging for curtains and carpets to be cleaned and reporting problems with the upholstery to the Ward Manager.
5. Ensure there is an adequate supply of clean linen for patients use. Where bed making is one of the duties assigned to the Domestic Staff, ensure that all patients’ beds are made.
6. To keep linen room stocked and tidy
7. Undertake supervision to enhance practice and accept constructive criticism
8. To be appraised once a year

Education/Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Good General Education
- Basic numeracy & literacy
- Previous Experience of working in a care environment
Desirable criteria
- NVQ Care or equivalent
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- IT Literate
- Awareness of safe practice including infection control, food hygiene, dietary needs & knowledge of care programme approach
Desirable criteria
- Health & Safety Awareness/Course
- Basic Food Hygiene Certificate
- Knowledge of COSHH
Skills & Experience
Essential criteria
- Assist in provision of care to patients
- Ability to be aware of when to request assistance from senior colleagues or other members of the team
