Locum Consultant

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

Job overview

We are looking for a Locum Consultant Physician in General Medicine to join our Medicine Directorate with an interest in Stroke. Our General Medicine team will be responsible for delivering high end acute medical care to patients promptly with discharge back to the community quickly from our wards. If you desire quick patient turnover with a variety of acute medical problems to care for, then this is an ideal job for you.

The successful candidate with Stroke interest will provide individualised care based on multi-disciplinary holistic assessment of the individual care needs of people who present with stroke.

Main duties of the job

The components of the service which the successful applicant will help to provide are:

·  Support the delivery of patient care within our General Medicine team in line with national standards and Care Quality Commission requirements.

·  Have clinical and administrative responsibility for General Medicine team.

·   Liaise closely with Emergency Medicine, medical and critical care, in-patient teams and primary and community services to ensure collaborative working arrangements are in place, which maximise benefits to patient care.

·   Appoint and supervise our junior medical staff.

·  Train and help to develop nursing and junior medical staff and students.

·  Rapid Assessment Clinic for TIA/minor stroke patients held five days a week where 20 - 25 suspected new stroke/TIA patients are seen per week. There is also a service for high risk TIA patients at weekends and bank holidays. The seven day a week service includes same day CT or MRI scan and Carotid Doppler. We are currently achieving our performance targets for high risk and low risk patients, and looking to adapt this service in view of the latest RCP guidelines.

· Multidisciplinary rehabilitation of stroke patients on the stroke ward including meetings with relatives.

·  Weekly outpatient clinics providing for new referrals and medical follow up for recently discharged stroke patients and other patients.
